Let me highly recommend the Biodiversity Heritage Library as another resource, particularly for weird natural history images - here’s a wild person-mantis from around 1715, for example: www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/34387920

I feel like both of these are novels in waiting and I refuse to open either in case they disappoint me

Book spine bearing the grand title “The Romance of the British Museum”

“Eleanor Ormerod: economic entomologist”

I am having One Of Those Weeks so imma post random things from work that have made me happy, like these lying Victorians

Cute lil page of an alphabet book with an illustration of an orchid with bees in the flowers, which says “O is the orchis, named from the bee”

my favorite sign on the compactors at work:

Printer paper sign that says “please check compactors for ladders or stools before closing aisles!”

someone has scrawled “botanists” in with a caret after ladders

The 1511 Venice printing! I am losing my mind over here because our catalog entry mentions nothing about this and neither does the early catalog of books from this donor

Glorious pen facsimile of the title page, maintaining the weird spacing from the print version though slightly simplifying the embellishment

first page in manuscript facsimile, including the blank space for a fancy initial and the wee letter to tell the illuminator what it’s supposed to be

just gotta make sure people are clear that when I call this tacky I mean I love it with every fiber of my being also I for sure know there are tackier but this is at least vaguely botanically accurate

unnaturally vibrant color print of a collection of aquilegias in all sorts of colors

On second thought maybe I will just use this image for the entire presentation

These are wonderful and have reminded me of another favorite of mine!

Slide with the header “departure, voyage, arrival” and the four panel Gru plotting meme where 1 is “they go to the ship,” 2 is “the ship sails away,” and 3-4 are Gru reacting in confusion to “the ship disappears”

Oh it’s definitely horrible. I’m very proud.

I absolutely co-sign this: here are three of my current desk rocks

One “galaxy stone,” aka amygdaloidal black basalt with cool agate inclusions, a boulder opal bead, mostly brown ironstone matrix with a few flashes of teal, and a big clump of clear quartz crystals

I saw her art at Oak Spring Garden Foundation a few years back and it is just stunning! My photos obviously don’t do her justice but the up close details were so cool

Portrait of a Place: Oak Spring, a framed collage of flowers and leaves arranged like a knot work garden with a very geometric center and gracefully curving edges

Closeup of a geometric section, with a pansy in the middle of rigidly arranged leaves and further shapes made of yellow and blue petals

cf these classics of the two families:

Grey buckram the volume set of Rendle’s Classification of Flowering Plants. The title is written without serifs, very neatly, and there’s four dots in a diamond between author and title

Terra cotta buckram spine of Brandis’ Indian Trees. The author’s name has serifs on each character and a small flourish on the B, and there is a realistic sketch of a tree with a path leading up to it
