It is pretty easy to download books in epub format to my kobo. I’m going to guess that if an indie author allows that format, or if you can reformat, there should be no barrier to saving it to your cloud drive and downloading it.

There are good reasons to hate Amazon. But it’s not doing anything different than project guttenberg, Google or the Library of Congress has been doing for years. I only wish someone would have saved old nitrate movies before fires destroyed them.
