This evening, steelhead trout arrived in the creek from Cayuga Lake. Where the white suckers are mid size and droopy faced, trout are bulls, kicking upstream over the shallows. Under a magenta sunset. Phone stayed in my pocket; this can’t be captured.

White sucker spawn, Six Mile Creek. Male white suckers develop distinctive striped coloration during spawning. They stay in small groups of several males for each female. These suckers can grow as much as two feet long and six pounds, but most are smaller than that.

Scenes from today’s walk at Six Mile Creek, Ithaca: a very curious stone ring (not an animal bone; definitely worked). A dead pike, the first pike I’ve seen at the creek. It’s getting to spawning season but I’ve never seen them here. My son thinks a raptor dropped it.
