This literary giant’s Portland home just became a national historic landmark
The 1908 Queen Anne house in Northwest Portland preserves the second-floor writing room where Ursula K. Le Guin produced her final manuscripts on an Underwood typewriter.

Rename Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard after Ursula K. LeGuin
We need to rename the street anyway, and LeGuin is possibly the least problematic famous human who has ever lived.

Fossil Friday! Finally completed my interpretation of Meganeuropsis permiana. It’s pretty much full size, but head is too big (not sure how this happened). Will probably use this in my classroom to amaze and delight my students. #meganeura #carboniferous #SciArt #PaleoArt #crochet
Life-sized crocheted Meganeuropsis permiana (ancient and huge griffenfly). Wingspan is about 28 inches. Crocheted in purples, greens, and a bit of fluorescent red. There are beaded details. The big bug is perched atop an Eiffel Tower-shaped lamp. Also shown is an Olympus Mons tissue box. On the wall is a crocheted tree of life.

Saw a bunch of cool wiggly clam worms in the shallow waters around City Island yesterday. Seagulls were feasting on them. Wikipedia says early spring is mating season and they develop the ability to swim. Fun to see, but they look like a Klingon delicacy. #invertebrate #clamworm

Blizzard time in NYC! The wet snow is sticking to horizontal AND vertical surfaces ☃️
Nighttime picture of a blizzard. Photo was taken from indoors, so there is a faint image of a fly screen through which we see a snow-laden tree and shrub. In front of them is a wooden picket fence. In the background is a bare tree with branches highlighted by snow. A house in the distance is illuminated by a lonely -seeming porch light. Leafless branches of a maple tree are highlighted by snow. Behind the tree a low stone wall has snow sticking to vertical surfaces, as well as snow on top of it. Two houses can been seen in the distance.

Apropos of nothing in this terrible timeline, I crocheted a Labubu. #crochet
Pink and fuzzy crocheted Labubu stuffed toy. Face is made of a lighter pink wool and isn’t fuzzy. Eyes and nose are made of buttons and the mouth is made of round while beads. My sister says it looks like creepy skull teeth.

On our trip to the UK, my son had the idea to walk the White Cliffs of Dover beach path and visit castles along the way. The cliffs and castles did not disappoint! Of course I was really excited about all that chalk! And black flint! And black flint used in ancient buildings! #EarthScienceTeacher
Stone wall at Dover Castle incorporating fist-sized chunks of black flint. Main entrance to Dover castle in the south of England. Ancient Roman lighthouse from about 50 CE. The Romans used the local black flint, sandstone, and reddish Roman bricks in its construction. My children for scale.

The lighthouse was originally about 24 meters tall (80 feet). From this view, there is an arched doorway and two arched windows above. My son and daughter are standing at the base of the structure.

View from the top of The White Cliffs of Dover. The path is seen in the left and is light colored due the the local chalk. In the upper left are the distinctive white cliffs. The seam is a blue-green color. Visible that day, but not apparent in the photo was France.

Just got back from a wonderful trip the the UK with my children. Lots of museums, lots of exploring. In Glasgow we went to the #HunterianMuseum where there is a really good natural history collection on display. Including some drawings I did here. #SciArt #PaleoArt
Drawing of a thylacine. Sketch is black and white ink with multicolored fur. This carnivorous marsupial is shown standing on all fours. Writing on sketch reads: “Drawn from taxidermied thylacine at Hunterian Museum. Glasgow, August 2025.”Drawing of cheerful dimetrodon. Inked in black and white with shading in multicolored crosshatching. Text on drawing reads “This is from a dimetridon [sic…I misspelled the name of this critter] cutout mod at Hunterian museum. Original is by Vernon Edwards. The models were sold at the Natural History Museum in the mid-1920s.”
At the bottom of the page I wrote: “feeling sick, so I stayed in Coatbridge.”

Last week we had our pop-up Natural History Museum and students in my Earth Science classes shared their tiny megafauna dioramas (with accompanying signage). #AMNH #PaleoArt #SciArt
Sign on smart board that reads “Welcome to the Landmark High School Natural History Pop-Up Museum”. Text is in a whimsical yellow font. Background of sign is fake wood grain. Tiny diorama of a giant lemur made in an Altoids tin. The lemur is perched in a tree and seems to be hiding from a predator that is some giant cat. Diorama made in an Altoids tin showing a cave bear, mammoth, and cave lion in their Pleistocene habitat. Student holding their Altoids tin diorama with 2 species of eurypterids and one ammonite. Accompanying sign reads:
Jaekelopterus: a glimpse into Ancient Aquatic Life and has diagrams of the anatomy of the animals and 2 plants also present in the diorama.

Made this #Mammoth mini-diorama as a sample for my Earth Science classes. In this project, students choose an extinct megafauna species and make a wee little diorama in an altoids tin. Must also have at least 1 plant + 1 animal that was also a part of the ecosystem. #PaleoArt #FossilFriday #SciArt
Mini-diorama of a woolly mammoth in an Altoids tin. Images are made from card stock and are layered to create a 3D effect. In the background (on the lid of the tin) is a blue sky with stuffing glued to blue paper to look like clouds in the sky. Purple and pink mountains peek behind pine trees. In the foreground the mammoth stands in snow - silver and white glitter - with some more pine trees around it. A small shrub also pops up through the snow. For an added bonus, but not scientific verisimilitude, the mammoth has mismatched googly eyes.

We all know that government websites are all screwed up, but I was still horrified and saddened when I was checking links for my Black History Month lesson and the NASA page was gone. You can see in the search bar what I was looking for. #BlackHistoryMonth

Finally finished this! Sadly, I accidentally made the body of the Cryptolithus trilobite pointed instead of rounded, which was a bummer when I had a trilobite expert from #AMNH visiting my class. I’m still very happy with how this turned out. #SciArt #crochet #paleontology
Crocheted trilobite art. At the top is says in crocheted lettering “Trilobites”. Under that written with letter beads it says “of New York State”. On the left is a mostly blue crocheted Elliptocephala trilobite, labeled beneath using the letter beads with the period Cambrian added also. On the right is a pink, magenta, and green Cryptolithus trilobite, also labeled underneath with letter beads with the period Ordovician too. Sadly I accidentally made the bottom part of the Cryptolithus body pointed instead of rounded.

Fun with the plentiful sea glass found at the beach on City Island.
Three refrigerator magnets I made by painting sea glass. They are shown on top of a red and white gingham napkin. Each have drawings on them. The top one has a light blue sailboat with a cloud in the distance and says “City Island” in script on the bottom. To the right, another piece says “City Island” in blocky blue and black lettering. The bottom sea glass magnet says “BREATHE” in a tattoo-ish font (black and blue lettering). A stylized friendly pink bird flies underneath the lettering.
