Yesterday, the South Street Seaport Museum screened "9/11 Water Evacuation.” Donated by Harry John Roland, the 90 mins of raw video footage documented scenes from the boatlift. I'm still processing all I saw. I'll share it another time, maybe.

Relationships get forged in both trauma and triumph. It meant the world to reconnect with USCG Retired Adm. Mike Day, an essential leader in the boat lift. 25 years later, his strength through humility resonated as strongly as it did when I interviewed him for Saved at the Seawall all those yrs ago

10:45 AM: US Coast Guard calls for “all available boats” to assist in evacuation of Lower Manhattan A siren call that amplified the in-progress water rescue by ~800 mariners that would go on to become the largest evacuation in maritime history, helping nearly 500K stranded. Larger than Dunkirk.

Hearing recollections from Andy Card, Bush's chief of staff, granted me a new perspective on the former president that morning, as did @vermontgmg.bsky.social's extraordinary The Only Plane in the Sky. I was honored to speak on a panel with Hon. Card following a screening of heroismandresiliency.com

The Great Boat Lift — the largest maritime evacuation that rescued 500,000 stranded people from Manhattan — began seconds after American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into 1 World Trade Center at 8:46 am on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

It takes a lot to get me to go to Times Sq but last night’s screening of “The Heroism and Resiliency of 9/11: From Tragedy to Triumph” was well worth it. So meaningful to connect with other responders and participants in the film. It’s streaming now on major platforms. www.HeroismAndResiliency.com

Also fascinating? The decisions made on the water during those same 17 mins between the 1st and 2nd planes. Even if it had been an accident... a small plane... mariners knew they had a critical role to play in all that happened next. Read more by @vermontgmg.bsky.social: nymag.com/intelligence...

I was at The Economist's office in New York when I heard news of the first plane hit on WNYC. I went upstairs to the editorial office and turned on the television. A small group of us watched the second plane hit live.

“All available boats” is one of the most resonating calls of the September 11 boat lift. But its true story began hours earlier. The decision by now-retired Rear Admiral Mike Day (then US Coast Guard lieutenant) to allow and facilitate an already-in-progress spontaneous response was key to success

Look for the helpers. On September 11th, some 800 mariners on 150+ vessels pointed their bows, over and over, toward an island on fire without knowing the full measure of its dangers. Who they were is who we all can be—recognizing our shared humanity and helping those in need. #WeAreAmerica250
