Reciprocity key to understanding the complex cannibal figure of the Heiltsuk
A cannibal in the Heiltsuk culture, says poet Jess Housty, is a “complex idea…as something that takes, but also something that gives. There's a really deep inherent reciprocity to the cannibal figure....

As folks receive their preorders or go out of their way to find my book (thank you!) I want to take a minute to thank and uplift my brother Ian Reid for creating the artwork that gave my book a face to look out into the world. I’ll be forever grateful that he brought the cover to life in this way. ❤️

I grew up exploring this lake (typically a boat ride, hike, and another boat ride away) with my dad. He’s now 81 with terminal cancer. Today we flew in together to fish, explore, and harvest medicine one more time. I desperately wish I could be a kid again to discover it all over again with him.

We often use noise deterrents like bear bangers as part of our strategy to discourage grizzlies from getting too comfy near camp. It will never stop being adorably funny to me when I fire one off and then the campers ask me, gasping: “DID YOU BANG THE BEAR?!” 🐻

When I ask people to blurb my books, I feel like such an inconvenience. When I get asked to blurb books, I feel like I’m in a magical secret club where I get exclusive perks and a really fun job. Brains are funny things!

11 months after finishing the first draft of How to Nourish a Cannibal, I finally wrote a new poem tonight. When I finished writing Crushed Wild Mint, it was roughly the same gap too. Apparently my poet-brain just takes long, unauthorized leaves of absence between books!

I am lucky to have a kickass staff full of neurodivergent, queer, disabled, and BIPOC humans. And I am all of those things myself! I believe we have a solid workplace culture and policies (driven by the team!) But I also want to cultivate a physical space that feels affirming. Can you help?

I have the privilege of running a beautiful organization called Qqs Society. I spent ~15 years as the fundraiser for Qqs and have been the Executive Director for 5+ years. The seeds of Qqs’ work started in the mid-90s and it was incorporated as a society in 1999 and a charity in 2001.
