Springer-Nature launched a series of "Discover" journals that closely mimic MDPI titles -- sharing *identical* journal names, and likely similar business model. What is going on, and why researcher will - as always - fall for it? A 🧵 the-strain-on-scientific-publishing.github.io/website/post...

Winter has taken its toll. This poor fox paid; a bunch of raven collected. All very dramatic!

As an ecologist, I fail to see how culling a population would "prevent and reduce damage caused by wolves" as empty niches would simply be filled by new individuals. news.err.ee/1609559732/w...

Apocynaceae is remarkably diverse. I am especially fascinated by the Ceropegieae tribe. This photo shows Orbea tapscottii in the Waterberg, South Africa. This individual appears to have disappeared after a veld fire.

One of my favourite fungus observations is this anemone stinkhorn (Aseroe rubra) along Sani Pass road in South Africa.

Parasitc plants are fascinating, and easily overlooked. Some time ago I found this Agelanthus sambesiacus (Zambezi mistletoe) somewhere along a road in the Waterberg, South Africa.

Estonia is probably the best country in Europe to observe lynx in the wild. This is the third year in a row that I see these cats around the house.
