Delighted and delighted listening to the brilliant Olivia Cronk on WZRD especially her particular conception of the poetry novel: the interesting things you can do in poetry, but with the novel’s provision of “glass after glass of water. My favorite page of Gwenda, Rodney so far.
The cover of the poetry novel Gwenda, Rodney by Olivia CronkCast

Narrator, in love with the beautiful man
Carla, confidante to the Narrator
Rodney, the beautiful man
Gwenda, mother to RodneyPage 37:

The beautiful man had been Rodney in Indiana.

The beautiful man had lived for a long time with his mother Gwenda and with sometimes a wayward cousin or some friend of the family. Someone to accompany him on his long June walks, pushing Gwenda’s wheelchair around the neighborhood,

smoking long-smoke and side-eyeing the neighbors some.

The usual narratives apply: Gwenda had been a beauty. The family’s wealth had decayed. Yellow sun roared around a room with a tiny electric fan on a dresser. Gwenda dominated Rodney down to his very rivers. But also Gwenda was brilliant, Rodney was madly delighted by her jokes, cousins fell into deep enchantment in their summer visits, the side-eyed neighbors were sad-eyed dopes, deep down envious of Gwenda’s long laugh and Rodney’s long legs as he bitterly lounged on the front porch reading his specially ordered books.

If you happen to be on the fence about adopting two sibling kittens, my advice is do it.

School starts tomorrow. This is me a year ago super excited to teach in person for the first time in 2.5 years. AY 22-23 turned out to be heartbreaking—signs of severe administrative malpractice and neglect at every turn. Currently working without a contract after 200+ days of negotiations.
