I made a new flyer for Coffee Zombie Collective! This one announces their upcoming Halloween show at Moe’s Alley on October 10th with opener Rabbit Truck.
Digital painting of a monster sitting on a stump in the swamp surrounded by dark trees, dark water, and a dark sky. He crosses one leg and looks down at his phone as he lifts a wooden mug to his mouth. Spooky text (“Ghoulish Fright” font by Brian J. Bonislawsky from DaFont.com) fills up the left side of the painting in alternating lines of light purple, dark purple, and green, reading, “Coffee Zombie Collective / with Special Guest / Rabbit Truck / October Tenth / Beeeeewaaaaare! / Tickets at / MoesAlley / DotCom.” A signature in the bottom right corner reads, “Baggs.”

The biggest news for nerds of a certain age is that the creator of Adventure Time, Pendelton Ward, will be there to participate in a live animated comedy show along with one of my favorite comedians, James Adomian!
Chris Wisnia’s 2026 CrockerTron poster adopted for a specific event at that year’s CrockerCon. The “CrockerCon” logo above the Tower Bridge remains at the top, along with the three vertical panels to the left featuring artists and cartoonists related to Sacramento. However, words were added above the CrockerCon logo so that it now reads, “Picture This! Comes to Crockeron.” Below that in a black box is the text, “The ONLY Live Animated Comedy Show!” In the main area of the poster where CrockerTron previously stood is text that reads, “Featuring Stand-Up Comedians James Adomian (Comedy Bang Bang, Rick & Morty, Gravity Falls)[,] Brandie Posey (Comedy Central, Vans Warped Tour, Lady to Lady)[,] Sean Keane (HBO Max, Best of SF)[, and] Rick Wood (Limestone Comedy Festival, Ridiculousness)[,] and Live Animation from Pendleton Ward (Creator of Adventure Time & The Midnight Gospel)[,] David Feiss (Creator of Cow & Chicken, Yoohoo & Friends)[, and] Mike Hollingsworth (Director of Animation on BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie).” At the bottom is a large red rectangle with yellow text reading, “September 2oth 2026[,] 2:45PM Doors 3PM Show[,] At the Crocker Art Museum[,] 216 O St, Sacramento, CA 95814.”

I finally added a background to my oil pastel drawing “You Know I’m Gettin’ Silly” and fixed some other details while I was at it. I also changed the name to “Zugzwang,” which is a German phrase associated with chess that means, “compulsion to move.”
Oil-pastel drawing of a mustachioed gentleman in a purple suit taking a large step across a dark-wood stage, one leg elevated and bent as if to execute a kick. The man supports himself with a cane held in his right hand while doffing a purple hat with his left. The hat has a light-blue band that matches his tie and socks; he also wears a brown belt that matches the color of his shoes, while the white of his hair, which grows from tufts above his ears but not the top of his head, matches his shirt and gloves. The man has green skin and bright brown eyes. Below the stage in the background are rows of dark-red theater chairs, all empty.

Anyway, thanks to Chris Wisnia for making such a fantastic poster and for not taking undue offense at my error, and thanks to Eben Burgoon for commissioning the poster and helping me out! [7/7]
Comic-book convention poster in the style of Jack Kirby’s Iron Man cover from “Tales of Suspense” #39. The title features white writing against a red banner and says, “Tales of CrockerCon.” To the left of the banner is a white circle with black text that reads, “12th year!” Instead of the Comics Code Authority statement, there is a similarly shaped rectangle that reads, “Approved by the Sacramento Arts & Culture SAC Society.” Below that is a white rectangle with the letters “MC” written vertically within it, and below that a white square with the text, “Free! All ages!” Partially covering the red banner is a large gray rectangle containing yellow text that reads, “Who? Or what, melds ‘pop’ culture and high art into the most breath-taking, most sensational comics festival of all … ?” Beneath that in an all-caps font decorated with a grid of squares is the word, “CrockerTron!” in quotation marks. The eponymous robot stands beneath its name, a hulking figure that vaguely resembles the architecture of the Crocker Art Museum, hunched over slightly in a fighting pose. Behind it, Sacramento’s Tower Bridge can be seen; over CrockerTron’s left shoulder are the words, “Heroic! … Defender! … of the comic arts!” Beneath CrockerTron’s left foot is a red rectangle reading, “The Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento / September 20th, 2026 / 4pm, free for everyone!” Beneath the red rectangle is the artist’s signature, “Wisnia? (after Kirby!)” To the left of CrockerTron is a vertical stack of squares meant to be read sequentially as comic book panels and features art by artists and cartoonists associated with Sacramento, including Robert Armeson, Suzanne Adan, Sam Keith, Adrian Tomine, Kelly Jones, Chris Wisinia, Wayne Thiebaud, and Ron Lim.

… The other mystery image is in the bottom left corner of the poster & I can’t tell what it is. The only place I could find the new CrockerTron poster was on Instagram, and there are some repost icons covering up that part of the poster, making it hard to identify where the image came from. [15/15]
Small excerpt of Chris Wisnia’s 2026 CrockerTron poster that appears to reference a painting by another unknown artist. The details of the image are difficult to make out as they are obscured by a purple “repost” icon from Instagram and an image of comic-book writer Eben Burgoon teaching a comics-making class.

And check out this year’s amazing CrockerTron poster! The fantastic design is an homage of Jack Kirby and Don Heck’s cover for Tales of Suspense #39, which featured the first appearance of Iron Man. [3/15]

There’s one stop left on my 2026 Spring/Summer Mini-Tour and that’s CrockerCon, baby, my favorite con of all! [1/15]
Flyer in the style of the late 80s / early 90s featuring a pink background spattered randomly with tiny purple squares and triangles. The text is a darker purple, uses the font “Gwenchana” by Syaf Rizal, and is separated by scribbled green lines. Here’s my other new piece, which I consider a companion to “Fecund Slop”: “Purification.” Acrylic on canvas, 16” x 20”.
Painting of a woman who appears to be on fire. She has yellow skin and blue hair; her eye sockets are either empty or in shadow, her mouth open. Her hands are pressed together in front of her chest as if in prayer. The fire is suggested by scribbles and spatters of warm-colored paint.

Here’s the first of two new pieces debuting at Weatherstone tomorrow: “Fecund Slop;” acrylic on canvas, 14” x 18”. I’m moving away from using colored markers as they make better rough drafts than finished pieces. Working in paint and oil pastels allows for the rough draft to become the final piece.
Painting of a jaggedly drawn Mickey Mouse as seen from the shoulders up, his eyes googly, his teeth sharp, his posture slouched. His ears and the ball of his nose are dark blue and his skin peach-toned. Mickey’s outline is made up of overlapping strokes of blue and red; the entire painting is splattered with multi-colored dots and scribbles. The background is green.

Website banner featuring white, all-caps, sans-serif text on a black background, the black textured with barely-perceptible, dark-gray lines of distorted wood grain. Small, all-caps text at the top of the image reads, “GABRIEL SANFORD” (on the left), “SACRAMENTO” (in the center), and “TONY ALLEN” (on the right). Large text in the middle states, “YOU ARE HERE,” with “ARE HERE” underlined. Small text on the bottom surrounded by a rectangle with rounded sides reads, “ARTIST HELPING ARTIST.”

THE STARS MY DESTINATION. As promised, here’s the color version of my grayscale reinterpretation of my colored-marker drawing of Hal Jordan! The background is from a photo I took of a dusty black table in my ceramics classroom; part of it looked like Jack Kirby’s Apokolips so I threw that in as well
Digital drawing of Green Lantern Hal Jordan floating in space against a sea of colored stars. He looks down in pleasure at his ring, which sits on his clenched fist and bursts with power. His other hand holds his lantern by the handle. In the bottom left corner the planet Apokolips can be seen, several burning industrial pits visible from space.

“Riven;” glazed ceramic, 2” tall by 2-3” in width. After the sea urchin (pic in reply), this is my favorite ceramic piece I’ve created so far. Still so small though!
Four photos of the same small ceramic bowl. The first two photos show the vase from the side; lines approximately one-sixteenths of an inch in width were carved vertically down the sides at various angles, intersecting randomly to create rough triangular shapes in the clay. A black glaze was applied and wiped off before firing, leaving dark streaks on the surface and within the lines. A third photo shows the vase from above; the glaze was applied to the interior but not wiped off and is revealed to be a dark metallic gold. The last photo shows the bowl from the bottom, where the lines from the sides continue underneath to form the words, “Baggs” and “May 26.”

“The Gil Kane Special.” Colored marker on paper, PhotoShop; 9" x 12”.
Colored-marker drawing of Green Lantern Hal Jordan, a DC Comics character from the Silver Age. Jordan is drawn in an exaggerated, almost grotesque fashion, looking at his power ring as he floats in space. His mouth is open and head tilted back, exposing the underside of his nose, something comic-book artist and Hal Jordan co-creator Gil Kane was known for drawing often and well.

I was honored and privileged to have my art on the cover of this month’s issue of Natomas Magazine and to be featured on the inside pages as well!
Cover and page six of the July issue of “Natomas Magazine.” Most of the cover is taken up by the digital painting “How Bad I Was” by Jesse Baggs, which depicts a futuristic-looking woman–who is nude except for a Mayan-looking headset–breathing out a cloud of smoke that takes the form of a genie’s face. The magazine’s logo, a black, capital “N” atop a red square, sits in the upper left corner of the image along with the text, “Celebrate Neighbors.” Text in the middle reads, “Jesse Baggs Art [❡] United States 250 [❡] Community Loss [❡] Jenn Chawla [❡] Safal Mengi [❡] Tia’s Home Bistro [❡] Dining Dudes[.]” Handwritten in the bottom right corner is the name, “Baggs” and “2 of 5.” Page six contains a feature of Jesse Baggs. A photo on top of the page depicts Baggs standing in front of two of his pieces, one of a silly looking Batman and the other the image used on the cover, “How Bad I Was. A block quote reads, “Jesse Baggs has explored the subconscious through automatic drawing using a variety of tools. He turned some of those results into larger digital art.” Accompanying the text are two more works of art by Baggs, one of a silly looking Super Mario, the other of a wizard gurning at the viewer. A box in the bottom right corner says, “Learn more [❡] Jesse Baggs [❡] www.jessebaggs.com [❡] Natomas Second Saturday [❡] www.secondsaturdayinnatomas.com [❡] N magazine online [❡] www.nmag.net[.]”

“Nothing is Fixed In Place” by S. Baggs. Yarn glued on paper. Happy Independence Day, everyone! And don’t forget ...
Photo of a small piece of white paper on which blue and red yard is glued in an approximation of the flag of the United States of America. There is a square of pinched-together blue yard in the top left corner, and three lines of red yarn with spaces in between them so that the white of the paper can be seen. This makeshift flag sits on top of a piece of dull-brown wood. “‘The truth, my friends, is that America is exceptional because here, nothing is fixed into place. The frontier may be closed, we may have walked on the moon, but the work of fulfilling the values first enshrined in the Declaration of Independence–that work endures, my friends, and it belongs to us all.’”--Zohran Mamdani.

Art show flyer with a white background, text at the top and bottom, and photos in the middle. The first line on top, written in all caps and a black, 80s-style label-maker font, says, “SECONDSATURDAYINNATOMAS.COM.” The next two lines are also written in all caps but use a boxy white font outlined with a thin black stroke. They read, “SECOND SATURDAY IN NATOMAS.” Between the second and third line is written, as if by hand using a thick, gold, glitter gel pen, “6/13 6-8PM.” Beneath all of that are two photos set at a slight angle to each other and outlined in the same style of thick, gold glitter. The photo on the left is in black and white and depicts a middle-aged white man with close-cropped white hair on the sides and short dark hair on top. He also wears thick glasses and a flannel and smiles slightly at the viewer. The image on the right is a digital painting of someone riding a skateboard against a green and purple background. Beneath the photo, text in the label-maker font reads, “JESSE BAGGS / (MULTIPLE ARTISTS INCLUDED).” Text in a normal font at the bottom of the flyer reads, “Golden Bay Mortgage Group / gbmortgagegroup.com / 3900 Lennane Dr. #200 - Sac, CA 95834.” To the left of this text is a circle outlined in thin gold. Cartoon drawing of a red big rig driving down the highway at sunset. The cab is tightly filled by six people and a monkey, who is dressed in overalls like a toddler and sits on the lap of a man in the middle of the front seat. In the photo, Baggs rubs his hands together in a similar fashion.

I’ll be participating in some art shows over the next few months, two at the Crocker and one at the Weatherstone location of Old Soul. Watch for more details here as they develop! Flyer created using Adobe Illustrator and the font “Gwenchana” by Syaf Rizal.
Flyer in the style of the late 80s / early 90s featuring a pink background spattered randomly with tiny purple squares and triangles. The text is a darker purple, uses the font “Gwenchana” by Syaf Rizal, and is separated by scribbled green lines. Green circles also highlight aspects of the text, which reads, “The Jesse Baggs 2026 Spring / Summer Mini-Tour. Sunday, May 21, 5:30-8:00PM: Art Auction Preview Party; Crocker Art Museum; 216 O St, Sacramento. Saturday, Aug 8, Time TBA: ‘You Are Here’ Art Show; Old Soul at Weatherstone; 812 21st St, Sacramento. Sunday, Sep 20, 10:00am-5:00pm: CrockerCon; Crocker Art Museum; 216 O St, Sacramento.”

I’ve been busy with freelance projects and accidentally took a month off from posting, but I’m back with the color version of “Stingers Up,” my ode to Sac State football!
Digital painting of a sepia-colored, anthropomorphic hornet wearing an old-fashioned American football uniform and running with a football down a football field. The hornet has four arms, two legs, and wings poking up from behind its shoulders. The insect’s face is cartoony and determined, brows lowered over its beady eyes, lips pulled back in a grin across gritted teeth. Stacked in the infield behind the insect are block letters forming the words “Sac State,” “sac” bouncing above the hornet’s stinger. Fans in the bleachers cheer on the hornet, while a blimp bearing the word “Sac” floats in the sky.

“Alternatives to Reason.” Collage; 9” x 12”.
Collage depicting an anthropomorphic horse sitting on a box in the middle of a cobblestone street. The horse has long, blonde hair, a glowing red eye, and buck teeth. It wears an orange sweater but is naked below the waist. It curls its hands below its chin and crosses one leg over the other. Emerging from behind the box is a small pink creature with buck teeth and round white eyes on each side of its head. Elegant European buildings can be seen behind both creatures, along with horse drawn carriages and men wearing top hats.

Here’s an ink version of my new piece, “Stingers Up;” Adobe Fresco. It’s based on a concept rejected by a client who since went out of business, so I decided to rework it with a focus on Sacramento State football. I’ll post the colored version next week!

My first mug! Like me, it’s a little gray, a little blue, a little thick on the bottom, and speckled all over.
Photo of a ceramic mug. The top inch, interior, and handle are glazed blue, while the bottom exterior is speckled blue and red, revealing the gray ceramic body beneath.

Work in progress. Adobe Fresco.
Incomplete black-and-white digital drawing of an anthropomorphic insect wearing an old-fashioned American football uniform while running with a football. The insect has four arms and two legs but one hand has not yet been drawn, nor has any background. Two wings can be seen behind the insect’s shoulders. The insect’s face is cartoony and determined, brows lowered over two beady eyes, lips pulled back in a grin across gritted teeth. Instead of a nose the insect has a cone-like protuberance.

Despite everything, I was still surprised this morning when I woke up to the news. “Show Them What They Won (Iran Update).”
Digital painting of an anthropomorphic elephant walking down a city street that has been ruined by war or some other disaster. The skyscrapers in the background have collapsed, leaving only steel girders poking out of concrete frames. The sidewalks are cracked and littered with rubble, the street full of holes. Smoke and ash drift in front of an orange-glowing sky. In contrast, the elephant wears a spotless blue top hat and suit, white shirt and gloves. The brown band of his hat matches the color of his tie, shoes, and cane, which is topped with a sand-colored stone. The elephant grins and winks at the viewer, gesturing proudly at the destruction behind him. A pink, rat-like tail emerges from under the back of his suit jacket. At the top of the image in dark brown text is the word, “Iran.”

Here’s the doodle my Wolverine drawings were based on. “Wolverdoodle.” Ballpoint pen on paper.
Red ballpoint pen drawing on lined paper of Wolverine squatting behind his extended claws, open mouth full of jagged teeth. To the right and overlapping with Wolverine are other doodles in blue ballpoint pen, including another drawing of Wolverine with his claws extended, only in this one he looks more rational.

Here’s a parody painting of Wolverine’s “Bloodlust” book, called “Poo Dust.” Did you know that flushing the toilet can aerosol fecal matter? My wife did, because she knows her shit.
Digital painting of Wolverine sitting on the toilet and wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans around his ankles. He makes a pained expression, biting his lower lip as he leans over his legs. His left hand rests on his thigh while his right hand holds a phone that conveniently keeps the viewer from seeing his genitalia. On the left side of the image, vertical brown letters that glow green spell out the word, “poo;” letters in the same style on the right read, “dust.” The rest of the image is filled up with brown clouds of indeterminate origin.

I wouldn’t say I’m good at throwing yet but I turned a corner recently and started throwing larger pieces. While small, this one was well centered, but I accidentally sped up the wheel when I was taking it off and dented it. Rather than throw it away, I decided to make dents the whole aesthetic!
“Piña de Pino” by Jesse Baggs. Glazed ceramic, 3.5” wide by 2.5” tall. Four photos of the same small ceramic vase. The first photo shows the vase from the side; it is glazed brown with a series of indentations in which the glaze pooled and darkened to a near black. The second photo shows the vase from above; the neck of the vase is slightly asymmetrical and a dent can be seen in the body below. The third photo shows the vase from the side again but also slightly above. In a few indentations the glaze did not adhere, exposing circles of white clay beneath. The last photo shows the vase from the bottom. Carved into the white clay body are the words, “Baggs” and “Feb 26”.

Here are sketchbook drawings of a crew team and Buffalo Springfield. I’m not very familiar with the band, but from left to right I believe that’s Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Dewey Martin, Richie Furay, and Bruce Palmer.
Sketchbook page containing two ink drawings. Across the top is a row of eight young white men. They hold long poles and wear short shorts and shirts printed with the word “crew.” Below them and to the left is another young white man in a crew uniform who looks as if he should have been with the rest but the artist ran out of room. On the bottom right is a group of young white men with longish hair and clothes associated with the fashion of the 1960s. Below them is written the words, “Buffalo Springfield.”

Here’s a digital painting of Wolverine using the title of his 1990 graphic novel, Bloodlust. Marvel can release a book with the word “lust” in the title, but only if the object of that lust is violence!
Digital painting of Wolverine in his yellow and blue costume, snarling and crouching with his claws extended toward the viewer, eyes spirals of red and black. Vertical, shiny red letters to the left of the image read, “blood;” letters in the same style to the right read, “lust.” Framing Wolverine against the background, which is made up of blood-red splatter, is a large, serifed, uppercase “X”.

Trump bullying María Corina Machado into giving him her Nobel Prize is the most Orwellian shit I’ve lived to experience, and I lived through the Bush administration.
