BumbleBEEP: A Sensor System for Bumblebee Colony Monitoring
We present a bumblebee colony monitoring system, BumbleBEEP. The system is fitted with thermometers and a custom weight sensor. These record data up to every 15 min, recording bumblebee brood nest temperature, environmental ambient temperature, and colony growth. These data can be used to assess bumblebee colony fitness responses to environmental stressors. For example, bumblebee colony thermoregulatory ability can be an indicator of colony health, and we demonstrate that colony growth has a lagged response to ambient temperature.
