I got to be so indulgent with all the details I included in Lunar Boy. But considering how much more tight paced my next book is, I have to actively remind myself to include things like ayam cemani in a very specific page and panel.

Superman, Lois Lane, and The American Way. #Art #Comics #DCcomics #Superman
American Way
pg 1
panel 1: a sci-fi rocket flies through space.
caption: In the vastness of space, a world beyond our imagination falls into destruction. A rocket containing its soul survivor travels across the cosmos.

panel 2: we see a young brown Chinese Indonesian girl smiling happily at nasi tumpeng meal in front of her. Her parents sit beside her, also happy.
caption: Years later, on Earth, a young Chinese Indonesian girl witnesses the massacre of her people.

panel 3: a barongsai head is burned.
caption: Chinese culture was banned from the public for years. Their names changed to assimilate with the rest of the Indonesian people.

panel 4- a looted building on fire.
caption: Much like how it was for Jewish people in Europe, the Chinese were often scapegoats for political tension in Indonesia.

panel 5- the young girl is carried by her father (a light skinned Chinese man with glasses) as he walks through a crowd.
caption: They were the scheming greedy minorities, hellbent on taking over the world. This sentiment was a holdover from Dutch colonialism. The girl's father warns her:
father: <This isn't the first time something like this happened, and it won't be the last.>

panel 6- darkness.
caption: she didn't know it at the time, but this was the American Way at work.page 2
panel 1: a baby cries as it is carried by an elderly couple.
caption: The rocket lands near a farm in Smallville, Kansas. An old Jewish couple raise the young survivor as their own son.

panel 2- the young Chinese Indonesian girl is carried away by her parents, who are despondent. She sobs.
caption: Across the Earth, the girl and her parents flee their home. The parents recall what they witnessed 30 years ago.

Panel 3- flashback of Indonesian citizens, a man in a mandarin collar and sarong with a woman wearing a scarf, glancing to the side.
caption: The United States funded the disappearance and mass deaths of alleged socialists,

Panel 4- Two women talk to each other. One is light skinned, wears glasses and holds a book. The other is dark skinned and wears a headscarf.
caption: Gerwani feminists, trade unionists,

Panel 5- A Chinese citizen prays in front of incense sticks.
caption: along with racial and religious minorities through the Indonesian military and right wing.

Panel 6-the young girl and her parents walk amongst the wreckage of looted buildings.
caption: to the United States, it was a crime for the communists to want something different for themselves. Millions of lives were the price to pay for America's anti-communist crusade in the Cold War.

Panel 7- ashes spread across a lit fire off panel.
caption: "The Jakarta Method" would be exported to other countries to cement America's place as a global superpower. A scheme to take over the world.Page 3

panel 1- a young boy levitates above crops, his eyes red from recent use of laser vision.
caption: The couple learn that their adopted child possessed inhuman power. But they knew how this would look. He was, after all, a foreigner.

Panel 2- close up of a sewing machine, sewing a Superman super suit. We see the House of El "S" symbol up close.
caption: To protect him, they made sure his displays of power never threatened the American conscience. He would be presented as a strongman who served the people.

Panel 3- Statue of Liberty.
caption: The young girl and her family arrive at the land of opportunity. Home of the American dream.

Panel 4- the young girl, in a kebaya and sarong, looks sadly to the ground.
caption: The girl if forced, again, to change her name. Whatever remains of her home are stripped from her over time.

Panel 5- the girl grows up into a teen. She takes off her kebaya, and now wears trousers.
caption: This is the American way, the song of assimilation. The girl naively hopes she can rise above bigotry if she plays by these rules.

Panel 6- The teen is now a grown woman. She is in a purple business suit and skirt, her hair tied in a neat bun.
caption: maybe she could prove that she wasn't the subhuman they saw.Page 4
panel 1- Superman stands proudly against a clear blue sky.
caption: An exceptional strongman debuts in Metropolis. He is dubbed the "Superman" by that very girl, now fully grown. When asked about the source of his abilities, he assures the press that there's nothing abnormal about him.

panel 2- a young Black girl holds Superman's hand, as a white boy in a cap smiles next to her.
caption: His greatest strength is his humanity.

panel 3- Superman smiles as reporter microphones surround him.
caption: He makes sure to emphasize this point, just as his adopted parents taught him.

panel 4- Superman stands proudly next to the American flag.
caption: So that no one would question his citizenship.

panel 5 & 6- A crowd of Americans cheer, clapping their hands and raising their children above their shoulders happily. Superman lifts a car above his head.
caption: It's the American Way to be kind, to champion the oppressed.
Superman: What could be more human?

panel 7- The grown Chinese Indonesian woman holds a journalist's recorder. She has an ambiguous expression.
caption: Superman is human. He promises.

panel 8- The woman, Lois Lane, walks past Superman- her eyes closed. Superman walks past her with his eyes mirrored and closed.
caption: When Superman and this woman assure others that they are not alien, when they have to hide how alike they truly are... that is the American Way. Why, it's the American Dream.

intersectionality cutting through white nonsense like a knife
Although we are feminists and Lesbians, we feel solidarity with
progressive Black men and do not advocate the fractionalization that
white women who are separatists demand. Our situation as Black people necessitates that we have solidarity around the fact of race, which white women of course do not need to have with white men, unless it is their negative solidarity as racial oppressors. We struggle together with Black men against racism, while we also struggle with Black men about sexism.

The way the Combahee River Collective Statement effectively deconstructs the terfy whiteness of Lesbian Separatism in one paragraph.
As we have already stated, we reject the stance of Lesbian separatism
because it is not a viable political analysis or strategy for us. It leaves out far too much and far too many people, particularly Black men, women, and children. We have a great deal of criticism and loathing for what men have been socialized to be in this society: what they support, how they act, and how they oppress. But we do not have the misguided notion that it is their maleness, per se—i.e., their biological maleness— that makes them what they are. As BIack women we find any type of biological determinism a particularly dangerous and reactionary basis upon which to build a politic. We must also question whether Lesbian separatism is an adequate and progressive political analysis and strategy, even for those who practice it, since it so completely denies any but the sexual sources of women's oppression, negating the facts of class and race.

Happy Bisexual Visibility Month from Lunar Boy! Bi people can identify with bisexuality in different ways, and bisexuality has always included transness 💜 #Booksky
Panel 1: Noah Wong, a 12 year old Chinese Indonesian kid, gestures at a rainbow flag hung on their bedroom wall. This rainbow flag is the Philly Pride flag, which includes brown and black stripes to represent people of color in the queer community.
Noah: Oh, you mean this old thing? I got it at a Pride event we had on the Bimasakti.

Panel 2: Noah flexes a wrist bracelet with the colors of the bi flag on them.
Noah: Along with this! PA-KOW!
Indu (off panel): Whoa! So you like *like* all sorts of people, then?

Panel 3: We are now in Indu's room. He is on his sci fi computer, having a video call with Noah. Indu sits, listening intently.
Noah: Well, I *am* bi. Usually when I think about people I *like* they're in boy bands or...they're that cool nonbinary kid I was hoping to be paired up with in class. I don't think I've felt that way about girls.Panel 1- Aminah, a trans femme Indonesian teen, recounts her past. We're in a flashback, where a younger Aminah is wearing a baggy hoodie covering most of her head. Some hair pokes out of the hoodie, covering one of her eyes mysteriously. Aminah looks solemn, looking downward while a crowd of busy people walk on behind her.
Aminah (narrating): I used to be really lost and scared about what I wanted. I had always liked girls, I was realizing I liked boys... People I loved got caught up in my confusion because I wasn't being honest with myself.

Panel 2: Young Aminah glances up at two women in the foreground. One woman wears a hijab while the other has her hair out. They're in conversation with each other. In the background, leaves and vines grow out symbolically.
Aminah (narrating): Accepting that I'm bi gave me clarity. But then... being *trans* felt like this big overwhelming thing ahead of me.

Panel 3: Different scene. Young Aminah walks away, hands in hoodie pockets. In the background, we see buildings and a mosque with kites flying in the sky.
Aminah (narrating): I wanted to understand what that meant on my own term that time. So I asked for space from everyone I knew.

You will be ahead of so many comic artists if you learn lettering. Even if you don't plan to be a pro letterer, it goes a long way in improving your composition when you're considering how the reader's eyes will travel through the page. It's part of comics grammar. Just doing this goes a long way 👇
"Arrange speech into a diamond shape. Small words and phrases on the top and bottom, big phrases and words in the middle." This is visually represented by soft purple horizontal lines in a diamond/kite shape.

I illustrated a book! Here's the cover reveal :D #Art #Illustration #Booksky
Zoya Shakes Up The World graphic novel cover. The cover depicts an 11-12 year old Pakistani American girl in sport uniform knee dribbling a soccer ball. She stands on top of a giant snow globe that contains the Galata Tower in Istanbul, with snow flakes. A gray cat lays on top of the snow globe too, looking up curiously at the girl. Behind the two of them are several environments from Istanbul along with food and carpets.

Text on the cover reads: ZOYA SHAKES UP THE WORLD. Written by Hena Khan, illustrated by Jes & Cin Wibowo.Image depicting Zoya (girl from the cover) in sport uniform and being lifted by her soccer teammates in celebration.

Text reads: Zoya can’t wait for summer—her team has made it to Regionals, and with her top scoring skills as a forward, they have a real shot at Nationals.

Image depicts Zoya and her family (her mom, dad, big and little brothers) exiting the airport with a big WELCOME TO TURKIYE sign above them.

Text: Except Zoya’s family is taking a trip to Istanbul for two whole weeks, and she can’t get out of it.Image depicting the family inside a giant beautiful mosque, admiring the interior.

Text: Zoya’s bad mood worsens when she sees her team having fun without her online, and the city, although beautiful, seems to spoil her younger brother Jib with free gifts and sweets.

Image depicts Zoya in bed, looking sad and regretful.

Text: Everyone is having fun but her. Will Zoya let her team down by not being there, or worse, will she lose her spot? And will Zoya get anything out of this trip besides FOMO?

People like blaming the pandemic separating voice actors from each other, but it wasn't out of the ordinary for actors to have completely separate recording sessions back then. It takes a talented voice director to give an actor context. To create chemistry and charisma. Aang's VA is a big example.
Screencap from a buzzfeed interview with Zach Tyler Eisen
BuzzFeed: You worked on the East Coast, while many of the cast were in Los Angeles. What was that experience like?

Zach: I was always separate from the rest of the cast, and that's what I was used to. Other programs that I worked on also worked that way. I think I only had one other session with another actor during the entire period of doing the show.

I didn't necessarily have the natural "back and forth" as if we were all in the same room together, but the credit goes to Andrea [Romano] for being my scene partner. She would know exactly how the others would react. She had to be every other character and make sure it all sounded coherent. I think she did a great job! People are always surprised to hear that, because it does sound so cohesive. So again — credit to Andrea!

Don't Call Me Superboy The gays have discourse about the Superman clone calling himself "Superman" #Art #Comics #DCcomics #Superman #Superboy
Panel 1: A far shot where we see a freight train making its way through hills of green.
Kay (off panel): Absolutely NOT.

Panel 2- We look to one of the train wagons that has its door open. Paul, a light skinned Black teen boy sits at the edge with his legs dangling out of the train. Behind him Bea Turner, a dark skinned Black woman in a head wrap, sits behind him and inspects his hair.
Kay (off panel, from inside the wagon): I'm not calling him "Superman."

Panel 3- Bea looks assertively behind her to respond to Kay.
Bea: Are we forgetting the cardinal rule of the Turner household, Kay?

Panel 4- Kay, a dark skinned fat giantess Black woman with red curly hair, looks back at Paul. She's still suspicious of him.
Bea: We value chosen names over the ones forced upon us.

Panel 5- We look to Bea and Paul again. Bea is still inspecting Paul's hair. Paul still faces outward to the open train doors but glances behind him at Kay. He's annoyed.
Kay: We don't have a "household" anymore, Bea. And he's a kid.
Paul: I'm right here.Panel 1- Kay glares at Paul.
Kay: You're NOT a man, Superboy.

Panel 2- Paul is frustrated at Kay, turning just slightly to look at her.
Paul: Don't. Call me that.

Panel 3- Bea mediates everything, her eyes still focused on Paul's hair.
Bea: Kay honey, take a break. You're shaking the wagon.

Panel 4- Kay walks away, deeper into the wagon and away from Bea and Paul. She's still annoyed.
Kay: Ugh.

Panel 5- Paul glares at Kay from a distance. Bea keeps her attention to Paul's locs, holding up a clump of his hair.
Bea: Would you look at that. Superman's overdue for a retwist.

Don't Call Me Superboy New friends figure out what to do with the Superman clone. #Art #Comics #DCcomics #Superman #Superboy
Panels 1 and 4 border Panels 2 and 3. The gimmick of this page is that Kay (giantess Black woman with curly red hair) and Bea (average sized Black woman in robes and a hair wrap) are talking to each other while Paul (a Black teen boy in a spikey leather jacket, gloves, and a hoodie) is minding his own business.

Panel 1: Kay is talking, guarded but curious.
Panel 4: Bea Turner responds, in a snappier manner.

Panel 2: Paul holds up his red bag, inspecting it.
Kay: You're taking the kid with you?
Bea: Why not? He did a better job protecting us tonight than you did.

Panel 3: We look at what Paul is looking at. The interiors of his bag has a walkie talkie and sepia photograph of Paul and his little sister when they were younger. Everything is where it should be.
Kay: That's not fair. I-I had to deal with something.
Bea: Right, right. That business you won't tell me about.

Panel 5: Kay leans down to Bea. Kay glances suspiciously at Paul.
Kay: Bea, we don't know this kid.

Panel 6: We look on at Paul from behind. He's zipping his bag closed on a table of supplies.
Bea: And he showed up for us anyway.

Panel 7: Bea responds sympathetically.
Bea: He doesn't have anyone looking out for him. You know I can't just turn away from that.Panel 1: Bea walks away from Kay, but glances back at her.
Bea: He needs a home, Kay. Don't act like you wouldn't understand.

Panel 2: Paul readily has his backpack on as he approaches Bea.
Paul: I got my stuff.
Bea: Ah, splendid.

Panel 3: Bea looks on at Paul kindly.
Bea: We never got your name, sweetie. What would you like to be called?

Panel 4: Paul is pleased to be asked this!
Paul: Oh. Call me Superman.

Don't Call Me Superboy The Superboy clone encounters a queer bartender and a queer giantess from space #Art #DCcomics #Comics #Superman #Superboy
Panel 1- dark panel.
Narration: The night Bea Turner lost everything was a blur.

Panel 2- A cop holds a gun, directly at the reader.

Panel 3- dark panel.
Narration: There was another raid, she was to be arrested. In her own bar.

Panel 4- A red gloved hand catches the bullet at the palm. The bullet's momentum fizzles immediately.

Panel 5- The red gloved hand clenches, with the bullet encased inside the palm. A faint glow comes out of the hand with little sparkles.

Panel 6- dark panel.
Narration: One of her children started crying, another yelled, and things escalated.

Panel 7- The cop's gun levitates and explodes. A faint glow and sparkles also surround the gun. Someone's using the ol' tactile telekinesis on this gun.

Panel 8- dark panel.
Narration: A blunt object hit the back of her head.

Panel 9- Bea Turner, a Black woman in robes and a hair wrap, is laying at the back of a police car and barely conscious. Her hands are handcuffed. She peeks with one eye open out the window.
Narration: When Bea woke up, she was in the back seat of a police car. Through the ringing in her ears, she heard a muffled riot outside.

Panel 10- POV from Bea's perspective. We see the car window. Outside the window we see a young teen with his back turned to us. He wears a leather jacket with spikes and a hoodie. On the leather jacket is the Superman symbol stitched onto it. A person pleads to this teen.
Person: ...In the car! Help her. Please.Panel 1- Paul Westfield, a Black teen boy wearing the spikey leather jacket, hoodie, and red sunglasses, opens the car door. He peers inside.
Narration: The kid who carried Bea out wasn't who she expected.

Panel 2- Paul bridal style carries Bea out of the car.
Narration: Where was her daughter?

Panel 3- Big panel. Next to the busted police car, Paul stands while carrying Bea. He looks on at a giantess woman who stands defiantly before them. This Giantess woman is a large fat Black woman with large red curls. She wears stolen police vests and has makeshift armor.
Narration: Where was Kay?

Don't Call Me Superboy Rejecting the American Way #Art #Comics #DCcomics #Superman #Superboy
Panel 1- a white man (wearing red spectacles that are falling off of his face) sits at the edge of his broken car door, looking up at a figure (Paul) wearing a leather jacket and red gloves crushing a gun to pieces.
Narration: Between the benches he slept in,
Paul: Nice shades.

Panel 2- Paul, a Black teen boy with a hoodie over his hair, holds the glasses to his face. Examining them. The white man is terrified.
Narration: And the alleyways he ran through, Paul Westfield discovered the kind of hero he wanted to be.
Man: They're yours man! My gift!

Panel 3: Paul puts on the glasses and looks to the side where a flustered punk looking Black teen girl gazes at him, grateful.
Paul: You all right?
Girl: Th-thank you!

Panel 4- The girl takes Paul's hand and runs off with him. We pull out to reveal that Paul had destroyed the man's car too. The man passes out in his car.
Narration: For a can of food, he had access to the grassroot venues of punk.

Panel 5- The girl happily opens the door into an underground scene of punk singers and individuals dancing. Everyone is wearing alternative fashion. Paul looks on in surprise.
Narration: It wasn't just about the music. There was something about the solidarity, the rebellion,

Panel 6: A Black man with several piercings, green lipstick, black nail paint, and a watermelon necklace sings into a microphone.
Narration: the raw self expression, that rejected permission and authority...it all spoke to Paul.
Panel 1- Paul, with his hoodie down and his leather jacket off, sews something yellow onto a black piece of cloth attentively.
Narration: Sure, he'd stay hidden for his sister's sake.

Panel 2- Close up. We see the black cloth has the House of El Superman symbol stitched on to it. Only now the "S" shape has more pointy edges to it.
Narration: But Paul wasn't going to go unnoticed.

Panel 3- Reveal! The black cloth was the spiky leather jacket. We look at Paul (red glasses equipped) from behind, putting his jacket on.
Narration: He was going to become the self made man of steel.

Panel 4- Closeup of Paul's glove wearing hands using red spray paint on a wall.
Narration: The boy who took the symbol worn by "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" and made it his own.

Panel 5- We pull out to see the empty side of a building is now decorated with graffiti. The graffiti has the new Superman symbol painted on the wall, with the words "TRUTH, JUSTICE, MY WAY" sprayed over the symbol. Green broken chains frame the art. Paul stands aside with a spray can in his hand, looking back at his work.
Narration: After all, what good has the American Way ever done for him?

Panel 1: Dark panel.
Walkie Talkie voice: I wouldn't consider destroying police property "laying low".
Paul: ...
Voice: I know it was you, Westfield.

Panel 2: We see Paul Westfield, a Black teen boy wearing a spikey leather jacket and hoodie sitting on a dilapidated house with laundry strewn about to dry. He talks to a walkie talkie while looking out at the morning sky.
Paul: So? They're not gonna catch me.

Panel 3: Closer in on Paul, who's still looking out into the sky.
Voice: What you did was unnecessary.
Paul: Someone needed help.

Panel 4: Flashback to Paul lifting the green car that was on top of the cowering woman.
Paul: I couldn't just stand there and do nothing. Knowing what I can do.

Panel 5: Closeup on the walkie talkie.
Voice: You're drawing too much attention to yourself. The more people know about you,

Panel 6: Paul is annoyed.
Voice: the worse these threats will become.

Tao says "Don't even think about it."Taonui looks up at a shark in aquarium while Conner blushes as he looks at Taonui. A tweet above them reads "be in love, go to the aquarium. Eat the Korean fried chicken. Go to the park, next visit the aquarium. Laugh in the rain. Go on a long walk, to the aquarium. Have sushi with a Sapporo, hit the bar at noon.
