New signal up at Milwaukee & Sprecher. Video detection and 24/7 rest in red with protected only left turn phases. youtu.be/59NEnjY-YL4?...

On our way to Wyalusing, north of the Wisconsin River was VERY heavily pro-Crowly; south of the WI river on the way back was pro-Tiffany. This is very promising.

Also, dedicated lanes, loop detectors, modern signal controllers and communication can be way more powerful than the most technologically advanced and expensive system on the market.

Good and effective TSP is a process, and the result of iteration and understanding of the problem at each signal. If you are buying a TSP "system" but dont have dedicated staff to monitor and adjust it, you're going to fail.

Im not sure what you mean by does nothing? The obly setting I could accept that is when running a signal in coordination and still requiring the ped phase of the coordinated phase to be actuated, otherwise all ped buttons will at minimum provide enough time to cross, and can do a lot more.

Depending on TPS settings, I could see ped phases being skipped...but thats really aggressive TSP.

My favorite go to trick is bloating the side street phase to ensure as long as the signal is green (or for some window of time) ypu'll still get the walk. In this example we shut off vehicle detecgors after 15" but have 26" of time remaining but only for peds.

If theres a high volume of pedestrians then you likely better off with a recall. NCHRP 969 has a great chart to help guide this decision.

Yes, the cycle length is the biggest factor in delay. I just wanted to use a worst case scenario as an example. Usually at least long cycles have opportunities that short cycles might not provide to help in the "harm reduction".

Jerry Schippa @jerryschippa.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Fun little math problem A 120" cycle with 7" walk that is recalled has more signal delay than a 120" with 7" walk and a 14" permissive window but requires puahing a button. Worst case scenario: 113" vs 106" delay Ave delay: 53.2" vs 53.0"

That would be ideal yes. Later this year we get our hands on lidar for the first time. That has potential.

Online urbainsts have taught people that all ped buttons are bad and that taping them closed is good. They dont tell you that screws up TSP and negates all the other programming geared towards reducing pedestrian delay.

Another reason why cities need to make sure to add bike count stations to their counting programs. They are easy to add, program, and pull data from. They also dont differentiate commute vs recreational trips. Measure what matters!

I really don't understand the decision making at Trails End, who refuse to offer a $5 or even $10 item to sell. You're taking these out of compulsory purchase range and into 'we have to think about this'

It's popcorn selling time again for cub scouts. And yet again I stand with our oldest trying to sell $20 bags of popcorn as donations to mixed results. Either they are former scouts and donate/buy a bag...or scoff at the price (rightfully so). Today we were scolded twice for not selling cookies.

I watched a few buses from earlier this week at the same time (AM peak) take about 4+ minutes. Which makes sense because the intention is to pretty much reduce the signal cycle failures leading up to a bus arriving, and this signal runs 120" cycles all day...it's a big one.

Jerry Schippa @jerryschippa.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
All of this....literally two loop detectors and use of the logic processor, fiber communications and strategically placed bus lanes/pull outs. Y'all...you dont have to overthink TSP!

A bonus fun bit that I was able to watch is the 'lock in next' option being disabled. The video I just watched had a bus operator pull up to the stop bar at Midvale about 1 ms before the EBLT phase went green...instead, the controller pivoted to the bus. 2:41 total time to do this whole segment!
121
Jerry Schippa @jerryschippa.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
The new operation is because in the AM the EB queue at Midvale can back up through the Segoe intersection...so when the bus is at Segoe & Sheboygan, an SCP detector at Midvale will significantly extend the EB green if the green is already up, or get back to the green sooner.
111
Jerry Schippa @jerryschippa.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Segoe & Frey simply holds the green, pretty straightforward TSP operation. Segoe & University calls a side street SCP detector/phase as well as calls the EBLT/NBRT phase just in case the bus falls a bit behind the operation.

Jerry Schippa @jerryschippa.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
A really cool new TSP operation was added this week for the EB Route A. When the EB bus gets the green at Segoe & Sheboygan, an SCP detector gets turned on at Segoe & Frey, Segoe & University, and University & Midvale. Each doing different things to help the EB bus.

The federal reimbursement rate should account for all fuel, maintenance/wear and tear...but not externalities. I think its something like $0.62 per mile? But thats going to vary in reality by vehicle.

Livingston can also provide better TSP than Paterson due to it running free rather than in coordination. Its also possible that the bus is being prioritized over the pedestrian. But I agree, 25" in the median is not what we are aiming for here.

I hate data centers because its the infrastructure of the rent seeking economy, not ownership. Every data center helps corporations push the streaming everything owning nothing model.

That is painful. Fails all of my "good bus trip" metrics. 1. Under 15% travel time arlt red lights. 2. Not to exceed a 30"+ delay at 1 out of every 10 signals. 3. Not to exceed atopping at 1/3 of all signals.
