Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 03/10/2026My weekend read is Anna Seghers’ Blood Money, her 1933 novel translated from German to the English for the first time (this year) by Lucy Jones. Like her novel The Seventh Cross, this is a panoramic look at a Rhineland village and a man on the run from fascism. 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Arthur Roberts has been sentenced to 8 months of Jail for defacing a synagogue in Victoria with hateful messaging. www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/ar...ctvnews.caMan sentenced for ‘hateful’ messages written on historic Victoria synagogueA British Columbia man who defaced a historic synagogue in Victoria with “unquestionably hateful” statements has been sentenced to eight months in jail. 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Sometimes I feel my phone is listening to me by tailoring ads that dovetail with recent in-person conversation. Then, at other times, I’m served ads for new apartment buildings in cities like Toronto and Halifax… 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 30/09/2026My current read is The Unfinished Metropolis, Benjamin Schneider’s passionate plea for more/affordable housing, better transit/bike/pedestrian infrastructure, and “jobs of the future” in American cities. 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 29/09/2026That’s a valid theory. There’s some overlap with the song and my own history, though (to my dad’s credit) he has tried really hard since 1999… 111
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I heard Harry Chapin’s 1974 hit “The Cats in the Cradle” for the first time in years today at a cafe. Though I dislike the music, the lyrics really grabbed me and I cried a little when I left… 😔 110
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 26/09/2026It’s a good day to have lunch in the food hall at Lonsdale Quay Market. 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Years ago I purchased numbered serigraph 4/12 of Canadian abstract artist Helen Piddington’s “Away and Beyond.” It was an unexpected purchase at a charity sale: I paid just $20 without knowing the artist and it turns out that her work is in the National Gallery of Canada. 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I’m reading Lady L, a 1958 novel by French writer Romain Gary that he originally wrote in English (and translated back to French). These Penguin Archive editions are beautiful… 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Well today I found out I don’t have prostate cancer; two weeks ago I found out I didn’t have colon cancer. So September is a good month. 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I have listened to part of this episode; Matthews must have been quite the “New Orleans Character” (I know from reading newly-reissued Nancy Lehmann works that there are definitely some “characters” there!). 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Though I’m not Jewish, my maternal grandmother was partially descended from Spanish Sephardic Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism by Spain’s government (my other 3 grandparents were of English and Irish descent). #antisemitism was real back then and it’s real today. 100
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 23/09/2026I accompanied a friend who wanted to look at a few properties today in the West End of downtown Vancouver today. I took some pictures from the viewing deck at one of the buildings we visited; despite some haze it was a beautiful afternoon. 030
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 19/09/2026This looks like a great read. I’m going to download the episode ! 111
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 18/09/2026A few of the recordings on Apple Classical have Nimrod at just 3:30, and that almost seems *too fast* for a score marked Adagio… 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Today my partner has an appointment at the Eye Care Centre, an unapologetically Brutalist building near Vancouver General Hospital. 020
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Well there’s the irony following his comments about Glenn Gould’s slow tempo on the Brahms D Minor Concerto back in 1962! I do agree that an unorthodox interpretation can be a good (or great) one. 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I like Leonard Bernstein, but I’m puzzled by his 1982 recording of Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The tempo is very slow: “Nimrod” exceeds 6 minutes whilst most other recordings/conductors finish it in 4 to 4 1/2 minutes… 210
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Jewish orgs raised concerned about his comments; given their concerns about antisemitism I take them seriously. I think simply telling his audience he’d donate a portion of his earnings to Gaza war aid groups & encouraging fans to donate too might have been more effective (& raised more?). 100
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 17/09/2026$4 million in humanitarian aid - half of it coming from Robert Kraft, the stadium owner - will actually help people in Gaza more than Macklemore’s stage speeches. 200
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Today I’ll finish reading The Typewriter and the Guillotine. Written by Vancouver-based Mark Braude, it’s the story of Janet Flanner- a 🏳️🌈 New Yorker magazine correspondent living in Paris in the 1930s- and a German serial killer she eventually wrote about. 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 15/09/2026The new-ish EY Tower reminds me of a slightly askew Rubik’s Cube… 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 15/09/2026How was the rest of your time in Markham? I imagine you weren’t there long enough to record with Toronto-area pod-guests like Seth or Maurice Vellekoop… 100
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Fast Iron Cleaners, located inside the Royal Centre in downtown Vancouver, wants its customers to be dirty! 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 15/09/2026My grandmother was born on this day in 1927 and she died on this day (hear birthday) in 2015. She is not forgotten. 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 15/09/2026It was not just the phrase “Free Palestine.” Macklemore has a long history of controversy over Jewish issues as he dressed up as a Hasidic man (with an oversized “hook nose”) several years ago. And they called out the Met Life Stadium performance as one-sided and biased. 100
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Mainstream Jewish groups like Anti Defamation League have called out Macklemore for antisemitism. It’s hard to have much sympathy for someone engaging in bigotry. I do hope for long-term peace for Palestinians and Israelis but Macklemore isn’t bringing it. 😔 100
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 14/09/2026It’s actually a fairly large suburb of Toronto but I haven’t spent much time there. 110
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Bears are my favourite animals, so I love the theme of this new cafe in Vancouver. Alas, I wish they had not used GenAI to advertise their food; the images look very unappetizing (note the Persian Herb Frittata at lower right). 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 09/09/2026The Finnish artist Tove Jansson was most famous for the Moomins but she did so much other art & wrote some great fiction too. She was also a 🏳️🌈 person who lived life on her own terms; the world is still catching up to her… 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 08/09/2026To anyone who says that GHP-1 drugs (Ozempic, Wegovy, etc) are “genociding fat people”: 1) You disrespect victims & survivors of real genocides in Rwanda, Europe (Shoah), etc. 2) You disrespect science just like RFK Jr & his ilk. 3) You don’t really care about bodily autonomy. 001
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 08/09/2026I’m reading Serena Kutchinsky’s *Kutchinsky’s Egg*, the story of how family built a successful London jewellery business only to lose it when her father built the world’s largest jewelled egg in 1990z. Serena is a journalist and this book is a great read so far… 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 07/09/2026@stuckinabook.bsky.social You might enjoy this, and it’s available in the Penguin Archive series (shown in my photo)! 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I read Arthur Schnitzler’s “A Confirmed Bachelor” cover-to-cover yesterday evening. It was my first book by the late Austrian writer and it was definitely a page-turner with a lot of “psychodrama”; Schnitzler regularly corresponded with Freud. 110
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 07/09/2026That’s my favourite bookshop to visit when I head down to Seattle. 020
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Mahler never crossed into atonality, but there is enough dissonance in his Symphony #9 that it feels eerily prophetic in hindsight. 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 05/09/2026The onset of a cold and accompanying runny nose has interrupted my long weekend plans (I surrendered my ticket to see Odyssey in 70mm IMAX tonight, and my Saturday activities are scuttled too). Hopefully rest & medicine will quickly restore me to a normal state. 100
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Here’s the 1965 Grade 12 reading list for Mater Christi HS (now St John’s Prep) in Astoria, Queens. It’s fascinating to think of the literary “canon” and its mutations/permutations over time… 001
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 04/09/2026I’m reading The Sunday Book, an erudite essay collection from 🇨🇦 writer Michael Trussler; it was published in 2022. The author has Nonverbal Learning Disability and I am learning about that condition (and much more). 000
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 03/09/2026This curvy downtown building opened in 2017. The upper floors are condos and the lower floors were initially the Trump Hotel. The hotel operator licensed the Trump name, and the operator went into bankruptcy in 2020. The hotel eventually reopened as the Paradox Hotel. 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 03/09/2026You were very open/candid… any b-roll footage would feel utterly superfluous. 010
Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 02/09/2026RIP jazz singer Cassandra Wilson; she was only 70. I liked her reinterpretation of U2’s “Love is Blindness”; her body of work is worth checking out. youtu.be/m4n86NTraQg?...youtu.beLove Is BlindnessYouTube video by Cassandra Wilson - Topic 020

Jerry @jerryfaust.bsky.social · 01/09/2026RIP Wendell Berry; he turned 92 earlier this month. He was a great essayist and a person who cared deeply for the environment. 032
