Yeah! Used a SQUARE brush, kinda more artsy fartsy that way.

Jerk Douglas @jerkdouglas.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

the oddly shaped brush forces me to work in generalities. If I had a round brush my programmed instincts would take over and I might start rendering details too early but with the square I feel more inclined to actually "block things in" like you're SUPPOSED to do when trying to learn rendering.

Jerk Douglas @jerkdouglas.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

thanks bruddah, I used a SQUARE brush for most of it. Whoaaaaaa tres artistique! But also I think it helped break away from my round brush stylistic tendencies.

I've been putting my personal philosophy to the test, lately. This ancient arcane technique of, "enjoying stuff" is really effective at keeping me focused. Every consecutive day I can maintain attention gives me a tiiiiny bit more detail that I can withstand expending energy on.

ill upgrade them to the practically hideous "horn-rims" when the final product drops, so people won't be tempted to argue with me.

Here's me fishing out a story concept... Cassidy is annoyed that her old friend Candace decided to totally drop off the social map, and partly excuses her hyper aggressive meddling by focusing on Candace's ugly triangle glasses.

I've run this experiment over many cycles. Drawing from imagination is completely denied to me until I pay the toll.

I sleep for three or four days to alleviate the creative exhaustion from weeks of hard work. Now fully-rested, I am completely locked out of all my drawing ability until I spend 30 minutes doing some halfass ref practice. At which point I instantly regain all of my skills. How does that even work?

What if Turkish toilets were designed with Turkish Ice Cream Man mentality? Perhaps this came out less coherent than I imagined. Well at least there's some nice Shantae anatomy to gawk at.

So there's a story behind that one... My mother had announced her marriage to a new man some years ago, and me and all of my brothers (age 35+) were there for the news, and one of my older brothers (age 45+) copped the best "Mom... No!!!" you ever heard. We were rofling.

Chainsmoker Cat episode 2 was surprisingly funny. There were so many shows made by Japan that tiresomely clung to expositing the life of degenerates being pointlessly miserable, while not having the comedic payoff to compensate. But once they shifted focus to her fuckup friends it was great!

Haha to be honest, it only ever clicks when I don't know why. Very very often just sitting in frustration for days and days just causes things to happen. The best methods I've found are just to somehow minimize my frustration to put in the raw hours necessary to level up.

See, in animation school, sculpting was a huuuge deal and they wouldn't let us get out of it. But it was for a damn good reason. One: you make maquettes to use for reference, but two, you ideally stop seeing a drawing as lines on paper, and as a physical object you sculpt on the page. Also thx bro.

Ahh, I can really feel myself learning nothing. My solution of course, is to never do "ref practice" or "studies" for their own sake. I have to have a comic page or something where the ref image carries information which I can implement. Then it will maaagically stick.
