I see this also with smart people railing against leetcode interviews (which I fully agree is awful) If not being good at leetcode is the thing standing between you and a career, ROI on learning it is likely 7 figures You can be morally right and lose. You should still put in the time

Let’s say I’m completely 100% wrong, and you are correct. Engineers shouldn’t have to worry about social signals in hiring. 100% moral victory. Everyone else is wrong. What changes? Nothing. You still have to get good at interviews because that’s the way the world works.

“Contrived, pressure-filled situations” can also describe many of the examples I listed. Ever jump on a call with a (justifiably) angry customer? Present failure to an exec? Like, I’m sorry, I wish it wasn’t this way too

You can’t opt out of social ceremony without severely limiting your career. Sorry And the bar isn’t “is there a theoretical better process or test?” It needs to be repeatable and scalable and take a minimum of time and resources. Interviews are a (v flawed) local maximum.

If you can’t communicate clearly with the interviewer, are you going to be able to with a teammate? A peer on a different team? A customer? Leadership? Marketing? Sales? Can you describe the work you’ve done? The work you’re about to do? To someone who isn’t an engineer? Can you compromise?

Fully agree that job interviews are frequently contrived and awful (esp when the interviewer themselves lacks these communication skills) But thinking technical skills are all that matters is a frequently self-limiting belief held by engineers who are not applying systems thinking broadly enough

I think this is a bit of a spherical cow. Getting actual work done in orgs frequently requires clear communication and navigating these same social dynamics I think there is definitely a role for “I take the tickets and turn them into code” but without “soft skills” that hits an upper bound quick

Yeah, the controller works as a translator between the steam input and whatever the switch expects over USB But this goes way farther 🤯 Wild that reverse engineering embedded devices has gotten so much easier so quickly!

The hid controller allows me to connect the existing puck, which keeps things simple so I don’t have to repair But this is cool!

I honestly expected this to be more of a project but it was done in like 5 minutes

A and B, X and Y are swapped from the labels, but are in the same place they would be on a Switch controller, an unfortunate annoyance. In theory I could remap things including the back buttons too, but I’m pretty happy just to be able to use the comfy controller that I like for now

At least for the way I work with code today, models seem pretty saturated. Cheaper / faster please. And cloud environments. I need this agent stuff off my laptop.

I want both. A lot of my bigger tasks can take their time and are well served by, say, Sol, but there are times I want to iterate and prod and ask questions and a significantly faster model would be a big upgrade
