How do you say, “I don’t care about saving lives,” without actually saying, “I don’t care about saving lives”?

Having my doctor’s office right outside a trolley stop? Check. ✅ Having gaps in the sidewalk between the two? Not good. ❌ #SafeStreets aren’t just transportation policy. Safe streets = healthcare.

Happy Labor Day! 🚌🚲🚶‍♀️🏗️ Today we celebrate the workers who keep our communities moving, build the homes we need, operate our transit, maintain our streets, and make San Diego a better place to live. Here’s to building a region where everyone can get to work safely, affordably, and reliably.

I sold my car and our household went down to one car. It’s been great. More walking, biking, and transit -we haven’t missed the second car. The more we make those options safe and reliable, the more people can do the same.

Transit commute + Dividing Line by ACLU’s Deborah Archer. Infrastructure isn’t neutral. If we want cities built around safe streets and public transit, we have to make that future easier to build for the communities who rely on it most. @aclu.org
A hand holds a library copy of the book Dividing Lines: How Transportation Infrastructure Reinforces Racial Inequality by Deborah N. Archer in the foreground. The background shows a trolley platform with train tracks, covered waiting areas, and several people standing and sitting while waiting. The traffic signal ahead is red, and the station appears slightly out of focus behind the book.

If you live in San Diego and read Slow Boring, this is your bat signal. I’m co-hosting a meetup(3/10) for readers of Matt Yglesias’s newsletter. Policy nerds, housing wonks, transit heads welcome. form.123formbuilder.com/6936107/slow... @mattyglesias.bsky.social
Graphic with the Slow Boring logo above the words “Slow Boring San Diego Meetup” over a faded San Diego skyline background. Event details at the bottom read: “March 10 | 5:00–7:30 PM | The Church by The Lost Abbey (Downtown).”

These three books really shaped how I thought about government and state capacity in 2025 — why it struggles to deliver, and how it can do better: Abundance by @ezraklein, Why Nothing Works by @MarcDunkelman, and Recoding America by @pahlkadot. What belongs on my 2026 list?

Speaking to the press today about a heartbreaking preventable tragedy. A 6-year-old was killed by a hit-and-run driver making a left turn on Ingraham St, part of the PB bike path a block from an elementary school. Enough is enough. We must invest in streets that put safety first.
