Today is the Entrada Folklórica for Bolivia’s Festival of the Virgin of Urkupiña. This weekend is the mass and pilgrimage. Sad to miss it all this year. Here is a photo of me in a mine with my stone, which was confiscated by airport security on my way home.

One of the best books I've read this year was published in 1920. A. G. Sertillanges wrote "The Intellectual Life" as a guide for scholars, researchers, and writers who feel called to do serious thinking. It asks more of you than most so-called "productivity" books ever would. Exactly what I needed.

Rainer Maria Rilke to a young poet: go into yourself, find the reason that commands you to write, and build your whole life around it. Socrates said something similar… and drank the hemlock for it. New piece on the strange, ancient history of the creative calling. Link below.

I recently published a documentary about the unique blend of Catholic and pre-Columbian religious practices during the Festival of the Virgin of Urkupiña in Quillacollo, Bolivia. Surprised face for the algorithm. YouTube link in the comments.

Listen to my conversation with Aatish Taseer about his excellent new book "A Return to Self: Excursions in Exile." Podcast links in the reply.

Sorry to link this again, but Bluesky censored the original post because it showed a picture of Adam and Eve in the buff (the other snake was covered by a fig leaf). I've published some notes on the symbolic nature of mountains in the book of Genesis. jeremybassetti.com/on-mountains...

So, the @bsky.app algorithm auto-moderates the nude human form in works of art as "Sexually Suggestive" and "Adult Content"!

I wrote about the metaphor of dieting when it comes to media consumption in the latest Genius Loci newsletter, which you can read here: jeremybassetti.com/genius-loci/2024…

Still very much rough drafts (emphasis on rough), the sample chapters for my book proposal have now reached the first round of hand edits. This stage feels like forward progress; it feels good. Anyone else like this stage, even if it means more work is ahead?

Hey, everyone! I’m new here! So here is a picture of my new friend — a stray cat I met at a park — enjoying a neck rub a little too much.
