I read Against Empire by Michael Parenti. In it, he carefully lays out how modern empire works and who benefits from it. "With luxury items for the few, and toxic slag heaps for the many." I highly recommend it. #jerahreads

I read The Fort Bragg Cartel by Seth Harp. The book chronicles several murders and drug trafficking crimes committed by special forces soldiers and veterans. There are some very disturbing examples of unaccountability and crimes being hushed up. #jerahreads

I read Bomb Power by Garry Wills. In it, Wills argues that the existence of atomic weapons and the associated national security state has created an unconstitutional secret apparatus within the executive branch. I'm convinced. #jerahreads

I read World Systems Analysis: An Introduction by Immanuel Wallerstein. I found it very interesting. It is a short introduction; not too much analysis is happening here, but there are some striking insights provided by this way of thinking about the described world capitalist system. #jerahreads

I read Palo Alto by Malcolm Harris. It's a detailed history of Palo Alto focused on Stanford University, the technology used or developed there, and capitol accumulation. It is bookended by the question, why is the youth suicide rate so high in this area? Very well written #jerahreads

I read Escape on Venus by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I found it very interesting both in contrast with modern fantasy/sci-fi and how it represents future technology. It's a quick read with many adventures and several cities/cultures visited. The hero doesn't think twice about killing people. #jerahreads

I read Kusamakura by Natsume Soseki. It's a story of the thoughts of a painter as he looks for inspiration in the countryside. I think it is beautifully written, as the poetic scenery provokes the painter to ponder the 'nonemotional' aspects of art. Highly recommended. #jerahreads

I read Understanding Capitalism by Richard Wolff. It's a very nice introduction to capitalism, with a focus on the production and distribution of surplus. If you listen to his Dialectic at Work show, you've heard most of it. It's very nice to have in one place on the shelf, though. Wow. #jerahreads

I read The Big Here and the Long Now by Thomas Hylland Eriksen. It is by an anthropologist who argues that the forces leading to a loss in cultural diversity (standardization mostly) are the same as those that decrease biodiversity. I'm convinced, but found the conclusion wishy-washy. #jerahreads
