The AUSLPA has asked the league for voluntary recognition of the union. The press release states the union has retained labor relations consulting firm Sports Solidarity LLC and law firm Altshuler Berzon LLP for legal representation. Sports Solidarity LLC was founded by former professional ballplayer Harry Marino, who was also the Executive Director of Advocates for Minor Leaguers, a group that eventually helped lead the unionization effort of Minor League Baseball players under the MLB Players Association.

“More than 80% of the league signed in less than 48 hours, so we went to the league without further delay, but we truly think we'll get everyone in the next 24 hours,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Left On Base.

The AUSL recently completed its second season overall, and its first with teams playing in home cities after an inaugural season at neutral sites. Former Marlins General Manager Kim Ng, who is also the first Asian-American and first woman to work as a MLB general manager, is commissioner of the league. The league includes a strategic investment from MLB.

Mina Kim is challenging her removal from the #WPBL board. from the opening brief filed in support of motion to expedite proceedings and motion for entry of a status quo order:
Plaintiffs Dymex Ventures LLC (“Dymex”) and Mina Kim (“Ms. Kim,” and together with Dymex, “Plaintiffs”), by and through their undersigned counsel, hereby submit this opening brief in support of their Motion to Expedite Proceedings and Motion for a Status Quo Order.

MLB has proposed schedule and format changes in the latest round of bargaining. leftonbase.beehiiv.com/p/mlb-propos...
MLB proposed changes to the regular season and postseason schedules in its most recent bargaining session with the MLBPA on Thursday.

The league proposed “returning” to 154 games per season, cut down from the current 162, beginning 2029.

“Starting in 2029, shortening the season to a 154-game schedule would create a standard weekly off day benefiting player health, and it would allow the addition of up to 8 more Postseason games by moving to a best-of-seven Division Series format,” the league posted on social media.

The proposed alterations to the postseason format would take effect in 2027. These changes would include higher seeded clubs to be able to choose their opponents in the Wild Card and Division Series.

the MLBPA has issued a statement regarding MLB's latest proposal, which includes reducing games to 154/season and letting higher seeded clubs choose playoff opponents:
"The league made multiple scheduling proposals today. We are reviewing these materials, including the proposed changes to the playoff format. Players will weigh in on these proposals and we will respond at the bargaining table. Unfortunately, the league once again made clear that all of its proposals are contingent on players’ agreement to a salary cap, a system that guts player rights and compensation, as well as its other anti-player proposals."

NEWS: Delaware Judge Danielle Gibbs has reserved judgment regarding Keith Stein's motion to dismiss Kim v. #WPBL and has given Mina Kim until Oct. 9 to submit anything further.
Court Authorizer Comments: The Court reserves judgment pending any further submission from Plaintiff. If Plaintiff has legal authority supporting the position that when a case is fully submitted for decision, the Court has the discretion or obligation to decide a request to inspect records pursuant to Section 220(d), despite the plaintiff-director’s purported postsubmission removal, or has the authority to stay the proceedings pending resolution of a summary action under Section 225 of the DGCL, Plaintiff may present that authority to the Court no later than October 9, 2025. Defendant did not support its motion or exhibit with sworn testimony. Nevertheless, the written consent appears valid on its face, and it is consistent with JX25, another written consent. JX25, executed earlier this year, also identifies Ankeiste Limited as the majority shareholder of the WPBL and Mr. Stein as an authorized signatory. JX25 was recently submitted to the Court without objection from Plaintiff. Thus, the Court is initially inclined to accept the written consent attached to Defendant’s motion as evidence that Plaintiff has been removed from the board. In doing so, the Court states no opinion regarding the propriety of the action or the ultimate outcome of any challenge. That is beyond the scope of the current proceeding. /s/ Judge Danielle Gibbs

She refused, and now, the CEO is firing her from her WPBL board position, effectively squashing her legal campaign.

MARINERS ANNOUNCE STAFF CHANGES

SEATTLE – Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and General Manager Justin Hollander announced today that Bench Coach Manny Acta, Infield Coach Perry Hill, Hitting Coach Kevin Seitzer, and First Base Coach Eric Young Jr. will not return to the Mariners coaching staff in 2027.

“I will always have the utmost respect and appreciation for these men, each of whom made meaningful contributions to our team,” Dipoto said. “After much reflection, we have determined that significant changes are required as we look toward 2027 and beyond.”

That is for them to figure out. But I will tell you that they are playing with an extraordinarily valuable piece of property: baseball itself. The value of that property isn’t just $13 billion in annual revenue. It is 71 million people walking into ballparks, billions of minutes watched on television and streaming services, restaurants packed around stadiums, kids buying their first baseball glove, fathers taking sons to games, mothers taking daughters, grandparents introducing another generation to the game and the guy sitting in the same seat he’s had for 25 years complaining about the manager.

official: Dan Wilson not returning as Mariners manager in 2027
SEATTLE MARINERS MANAGER DAN WILSON WILL NOT RETURN IN 2027

SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that following conversations this week it was concluded that Dan Wilson will not return as Field Manager in 2027.

“Collectively we failed to meet our own expectations this season,” Dipoto said. “Dan and I both care deeply about this organization, these players, and the future of the Mariners. After much discussion it was concluded that a new direction is best for 2027 and beyond.

“I want to thank Dan for his efforts over the past two years and specifically recognize his role in our club advancing to Game 7 of the ALCS in 2025.”

“I’ve appreciated the opportunity to lead this team the past two years,” Wilson said. “While this season has not gone the way any of us expected, I’m proud that the players in the clubhouse showed up each day to try and compete and battle in each game they played. I’m confident that the 2026 season doesn’t accurately reflect the talent, passion and desire of our players and know that bright things are ahead for this group.”

some really good info in this story
MLB’s owners are virtually certain to lock out the players in early December, when the sport’s current labor deal expires. No one knows whether a shutdown will shorten the sport’s 162-game regular season, but if it does, 60 games — roughly the end of May, by the current MLB schedule — will bring perhaps the most crucial leverage point.

If at least 60 games are wiped out in 2027, most of the league’s national broadcast contracts would extend another year, through 2029, people briefed on MLB’s rights agreements who were not authorized to speak publicly told The Athletic.

MLB owners voted this summer to increase the private-equity ownership limit for teams to 20%, up from 15%, a source familiar with the matter told Front Office Sports. The change was not publicly announced.

The revision was specifically made to match the NBA’s approach, where the PE limit is 20% unless the controlling owner owns less than 20%, in which case the percent the controlling owner has is the limit. (So if a team’s controlling owner holds 19% of a team, a private equity firm cannot own more than 19%.) Under a separate MLB rule, the controlling owner must own at least 15%.

The NBA, NHL, and MLS allow one private equity firm to own a maximum of 20% in a franchise. Forbes contributor Maury Brown first tweeted out the MLB rule change Tuesday night.

The Steinbrenner family is selling at least 4% of the New York Yankees’ parent company as part of the previously announced $2.6 billion financing injection from Apollo Global Management, according to multiple people familiar with the details.

The Apollo investment is a combination of debt and equity in Yankee Global Enterprises (YGE), and the Steinbrenners and some LP stakeholders sold some of their shares. The deal valued YGE at more than $10 billion, according to two of the people.

• Under current rules as reported by Sportico, a private equity fund can own up to 15% of a franchise, with no limit to the number of clubs a fund can invest in.
• It’s not known if there is a minimum dollar investment or percentage ownership requirement for institutional investors.
• On the team side, no franchise can sell more than 30% of its equity to PE.

ESPN's capitulating to the dollar signs — it's going to keep being embarrassing this way
I don’t need to tell you that this is equal parts rage-inducing and exhausting. But above all else, it’s fucking embarrassing. I’d like this country to go one minute, just one, not smashing a pie into its own face. While I’ll never be a "stick to sports" person, I think it’s reasonable to expect that a college football pregame show would be able to avoid the degradation that comes from on-air talent openly embracing dogshit policy proposals, and the horrible politicans backing them, for the most craven of reasons. ESPN and the SEC made their little pact, and now they’re trotting out their highest paid jackasses to put a late shine on it. It’s a pathetic effort that debases the rest of us.

The next week will be critical. In Springfield, the Los Angeles Queens and San Francisco Firebells will compete in the inaugural best-of-five championship, with L.A. up 2–0 in the series following a Thursday night win. In Delaware, the battle between Stein and Kim over the future of the WPBL may be coming to a head.

On Thursday, the court ruled to move the trial to papers, which means a decision about whether the league must turn over documents to Kim could be imminent. But Stein said he has the ability to remove her from the board at the end of the month.

I must apologize to Sydney Sweeney I underestimated how much of a dipshit she is
Novig CEO Jacob Fortinsky responded to the backlash onstage Tuesday at the Front Office Sports Asset Class event in New York.

“As a company we’re hugely supportive of women’s sports, and it’s a huge component of our platform,” Fortinsky said. “We never intended to portray female sports. Sydney is an actress, the biggest movie star in the world. We’re a prediction market focused on sports. That is the story she was communicating.”

He indicated that Sweeney, who is an equity holder in Novig, served as the campaign’s creative lead: “It was a very exciting process to work with her, both on the commercial side and the creative side. It really was Sydney who was driving a lot of the visuals and the messaging.”

anyway here's my story on DBH from last year (🎁) defector.com/private-equi...
How did a sports scene like minor league baseball—backed by a more than 100-year history of silly local mascots, intimate hometown stadiums, local ownership, and famously the most affordable and family friendly baseball experience around—get devoured so quickly by private equity? The answer, as it tends to, lies in the paperwork. Specifically, it goes back to when MLB made changes in early 2021 to the Player Development License (PDL), which is essentially the contract of terms between a MLB team and its minor league affiliate. Before 2021, an ownership group could only own one team in a local minor league baseball circuit. The new PDL got rid of that rule and replaced it with a limit of 50 total, and no more than 14 at one level.

The collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the players union expires in 2027, which will open up a window that allows MLB to cut minor league teams for any reason; MLB has been signaling its intention to do so for some time, even after eliminating dozens of minor league franchises in 2020.

Diamond Baseball Holdings, one of the most powerful and overlooked roll-up stories in sports this decade, is taking advantage of an “opportunity to rewrite the rule book” in Minor League Baseball.

Speaking at Tuesday’s Front Office Sports Asset Class event in New York, DBH CEO Peter Freund said the Silver Lake–backed company is seeking to bring a new level of efficiency and scale to the minors.

After MLB relaxed team ownership rules following a 2021 takeover and reorganization of MiLB, allowing for larger holdings of multiple clubs, DBH has amassed a portfolio of 49 of the 120 affiliated clubs in less than five years. Beyond just quantity, those holdings also include top performers such as the High-A Dayton (Ohio) Dragons, owners of the longest sellout streak in U.S. pro sports and the 2026 MiLB attendance leader, and the Triple-A Charlotte Knights.

Fallon also enlisted Brandon Flowers from the Killers, now fresh off of his country pivot, for the Western-ish “Love At the End of the World.” Flowers and Fallon first bonded over Depeche Mode years ago and have stayed in touch.

With the recent sales of the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Angels reaching prices well over their estimated valuations, the value of Athletics could reach nearly $4 billion by 2028 when they officially move to Las Vegas.
The Angels sold this month for $4 billion, according to multiple reports, with the Padres being traded earlier this year for $3.9 billion. Both clubs’ sales figures were above the estimated price by CNBC in the outlet’s annual MLB team valuation list released in March. CNBC reporter Michael Ozanian, who began the lists while with Forbes, has issued a new list via CNBC, with team values increasing as result of the two nearly $4 billion sales.
The A’s are now worth an estimated $3 billion, according to CNBC, placing the team, which is temporarily playing in Sacramento, at 17th in MLB. That price is up from the $2.5 billion CNBC had them valued at in March and $1 billion more than 2025.
