#dtpysaug26 Here’s the finished piece! I had a lot of fun with the pose. 😄Revolvers from above look weird though. If anyone knows about reference packs with revolvers/cowboys, please let me know! They’re weirdly hard to find.

Hope taping wet paper down works for you! I never found any tape that held the paper down properly AND would come off afterwards, which is why I bought my paper stretchers.

The wooden "flaps" are loosely attached to each side and are clamped over the paper, and are kept in place with clamps/braces. That takes care of any buckling.

I bought stretch frames a few years back; unfortunately, the company's out of business and I don't see anything similar online, but they looked like this: www.patreon.com/jennydolfen/... Basically, a wooden board with wooden flaps that keep the paper in place. Probably possible to craft yourself.

And absolutely yes to “find your own paper”. A good approach is to find out how much cotton you want. 100% cotton paper is more expensive and we equate that with “better”, but I’ve found that ~20% cotton is my thing, no more.

The key is to stretch paper while it’s wet. Watercolour paper warps. It just does. If you wet it first, then stretch it, it just doesn’t have anywhere to go, and lies flatter when painting very wet. Depending on the paper and method of stretching, that can sometimes result in tears at the edges…

If warping is your problem, you could try different methods of stretching it. I love using wooden frames that prevent 80% of cockling while working very wet, and it stretches back perfectly when dry.

Honestly? Canson Montval is my favourite paper ever. I really like Fabriano 5 too. Arches is not for me. There are expensive papers that won’t work with your workflow and dirt-cheap papers that‘ll just do everything you expect from them.

If you see her on your balcony, have a water spray bottle handy. Many cats will then decide that your balcony is out of bounds. Cat repellent spray also sometimes works, as does pepper.
