(4/4) I could go on, but I don't want to make this longer or more self-indulgent than it already is. I just want to tell people what's changing rather than disappearing from the beat. I've got lots more work to do, just on new topics. I hope you'll keep following @theixsports.bsky.social.

(1/4) After 8 seasons and hundreds of stories, I'm stepping off the Washington Mystics beat. It was entirely my decision, and I'm staying on at @theixsports.bsky.social as managing editor and Ivy League beat reporter. Mystics fans, there is an incredible successor lined up (TBA), so don't worry!
Me talking to then-Mystics head coach Mike Thibault before a home game during the 2019 WNBA Finals. Back then, we didn't have pregame press conferences, just scrums or courtside conversations like this.

I asked Sydney Johnson postgame about the decision to keep Georgia Amoore in down the stretch rather than going to the lineup with Sonia Citron handling the ball that has been so lethal lately. Here's his reasoning. @theixsports.bsky.social #WNBA
“I liked a bit of the flow and organization. From Game 2 versus the Aces, which was a couple nights ago, to Game 3, there were some things that we were very intentional that we wanted to do offensively in terms of our execution. And I was really, really happy with what we did there, and in some of those minutes, Georgia was a part of helping us get to what we were looking to get to. So I wanted to make sure that, knowing that it was going to be a possession game down the stretch, that we had Georgia in there because on this particular night, we seemed to have a better flow there on the offensive end with her out there.”

(2/2) But if you look at historic team ages, the 2026 Mystics’ average age is 24.13. Why? Because it counts all 14 players who’ve played in a game this season (including Ally Wilson). So the methods are slightly different, and you need to make sure to compare apples to apples.

(1/2) I got a good question on X about why the Mystics are the 2nd-youngest team in #WNBA history and not the youngest. On Across the Timeline, the page with team ages for this season has just the 13 players who are on the roster now. With that group, the Mystics’ average age as of July 1 is 23.5.

Washington Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson spoke pregame today about Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen getting drafted to opposite teams for the #WNBA All-Star Game next week. @theixsports.bsky.social
“It's tough to break those two up. They're like peas in a pod … so it'll be weird for them. I'm sure it will be weird for them. They'll be competitive in the moment, I'm sure, but they embrace being teammates. I think they have a real love and joy for partnering up.”

@ach4dc.blacksky.app, thanks for asking about the Mystics! On Scott, she could potentially fill the open developmental spot, if the Mystics choose to go that route. As for Harmon, I asked Sydney Johnson about her mins/development before yesterday's game. Here's his full response.
“I’d say Rori is certainly not out of the question. There's only 40 minutes in a game, so it's not — not everybody's development hinges on game minutes, and that's something that we're crystal clear on. That's why we pour into them so much, so that when those moments do come, they are game ready. And so game to game, you're more than likely going to see Georgia [Amoore] and Alicia [Flórez] out there, but when Rori's time comes, it's our job and our joy to have her ready for those moments, and that's that's pretty much everyone up and down the roster.”

I was curious about this, so I figured some of you might be, too. Which #WNBA teams are experimenting the most (and the least) with lineup combinations? Data is from WNBA Stats through Sunday's games. @theixsports.bsky.social

In a press conference today, Columbia head coach Megan Griffith was asked about Carla Berube leaving Princeton for Northwestern. They battled for Ivy League titles often, and Berube won 8 of their 14 matchups in 6 seasons. Here's Griffith's full answer. (Q: Nicky Fink) @theixsports.bsky.social
“I mean, good for Carla, right? Congrats, Carla. That's what, I shot her a text right away and just said congrats. She just said she's always rooting for us.

“I obviously have tremendous respect for how she's run the Princeton program the last seven years. And she's got a tall task ahead of her at Northwestern, which I'm sure she's excited to attack. But yeah, I think just like anything, there's always change, and we're going to be ready for whoever is going to take over the helm at Princeton next. But I'm happy for her. That's all I can say.”

Harvard WBB ranks in the top 50 nationally in points allowed per 100 possessions, per @herhoopstats.com. To re-emphasize the importance of defense, coach Carrie Moore talked to her team Monday about the #SuperBowl. Maybe Olympics are next. (Q: Rob Browne, Ivy Hoops Online) @theixsports.bsky.social
“That defense in that Super Bowl was, I mean, wowsers. Drake Maye couldn't do anything until like the last five minutes of the game. So I obviously used that as, defense will win you championships if you allow it to and [will] put you in a position to compete, regardless [of] if you're scoring the ball or not, if you can get stops. So that was my reference on Monday.”

Harvard WBB head coach Carrie Moore began her media call today by discussing the recent shooting at Brown & her sympathy for Brown, Brown WBB & HC Monique LeBlanc. She added later that the shooter being at large is unsettling; she's asked her team to use buddy system. @theixbasketball.bsky.social
“Really feeling and thinking of Mo and Brown and just their program, their athletic department, their university. … Monday morning, we had a film session, and [I] just really started it with, you know, it's our sister school. Our players have a lot of friends on that campus. I would call Mo a friend, and our assistants are close with some of their assistants. And so to just think of that being their reality right now is just really hard to swallow. And it … happened in an econ[omics] study session, and Gabby Anderson on our team constantly talks about her econ class and just how difficult it is, and she's constantly going to those type of things to prepare for her class. So I just — I don't know. It just really hit me pretty hard and just kind of shook me over the weekend, and just praying for them and really hoping that their campus community can recover from something like this.”

Brown alum and USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb began her postgame press conference tonight by addressing the shooting at Brown today. At least 2 people are dead and 8 injured. www.espn.com/womens-colle...
"It doesn't need to be this way. Sending thoughts and prayers to my teammates who have kids there. To the parents who have to worry about their children...we're the only country that lives this way. The college football cycle has been in the news a million times, and are we going to report about this? Like it's the guns. We're the only country that lives this way," said Gottlieb while fighting back tears.

She continued, "Parents should not have to be worried about their kids. I have a teammate who has a daughter who is in the basement of the library because she doesn't know what's going on there, and she's flying there tomorrow."

Before commenting on the Trojan's performance against the Huskies, Gottlieb emphasized, "Hopefully everyone is safe and praying for peace for those that have lost people. And that's that, it's more important than basketball. We can all be better."

I had to keep the story moving, so I didn't harp on these age gaps too much in the text, but this is crazy. The difference between the 2025 Mystics and the *median* #WNBA team by age is basically the same as between college freshmen and seniors. Shoutout to @acrossthetimeline.com for the data!
