#Friday #MicroFiction: A harmless snake climbed into a tall shrub to bask in the sun. While it napped, someone ducked under the shrub and bumped the branches, causing them to shake. The snake could only hold on with its tail so it slipped and fell onto the person, who assumed it wanted to harm them.

She had received her own beginning sprig as a gift from her husband. He had carried it home from New Aubury several years ago after delivering a load of planks to a builder there. It had made the journey valiantly with its roots and a small cluster of dirt in a bundle of cloth; which he had diligently kept damp. When they had planted it at the end of their lane they were sure it would be a miracle if it lived.

There was a mother deer and two spotted fawns, a wren that liked to chirp at her to wake up at sunrise, a nest of hairless baby rabbits in a warren under a tree root (whose mother visited them only a few times a day), a small fox that passed by in the evening that had no interest in the rabbits but sometimes paused to yip and scream just to keep everyone on their toes, countless mischievous squirrels who picked fights to annoy the crows, and other animals she had never seen before.

Lillian found the younger woman at a loss for words. “Come in, Marlow,” she instructed. She led her to the kitchen. “Mira is at Barrett’s. Edward’s playing golf with the guys from work so he’ll be home late.”

Marlow took a seat on a stool at the kitchen island as Lillian moved around it to the counter beyond. These were the natural positions they had often taken on more pleasant occasions over the years.

Lillian turned to her. “Do you have anything to say?”
