It's been too long since I've had a good Saturday scanning session. Very careful attention from my coworker today!

The @ausphysics.bsky.social Condensed Matter and Materials Meeting has kicked off at the beautiful University of Queensland, with conference Chair Ben Powell getting us underway. Day One of Wagga in Brisbane had great talks and great posters!

Fun facts about physics & astronomy, according to the American Institute of Physics (AIP): Fewer than one quarter of astronomy faculty or instructors, at any rank, are women. Fewer than one in five physics faculty or instructors, at any rank, are women. (Source links in 3/3) 🔭🧪 1/3
An infographic table from the AIP website:

Percent of Astronomy Faculty Members Who Are Women, 2010 to 2022

In 2022, 17% of full professors, 37% of Associate Professors, 35% of Assistant Professors, 35% of Instructor/Adjuncts, and 18% of "other ranks" were women. Overall, this is 23% women, and down from 2020's overall of 27% (matching 2018's rates).

#AMST24 had so many good parts that it's hard to pick a highlight, but one of the biggest moments had to be Australia's Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley reflecting on her time in the role and the way science will continue to shape our future - insightful and inspiring!

Today's Saturday scanning is a blast from the past - starting to remember how tricky it is to prepare nice Si(100) surfaces, and how difficult it is to get uniform heating across the sample.
