A reminder that the @pmpnconf.bsky.social call for paper’s deadline is 1 August 2026! The SEVENTH Performing Magic in the Pre-Modern North’s conference is open themed and will be 12-13 November 2026, online.
We invite abstract submissions to the seventh conference on Performing Magic in the Pre-Modern North, which will take place on 12-13 November 2026, online via Zoom.
Building upon the success of our previous conferences, which have explored a wide range of perspectives on magic in the pre-modern North, this year's conference will be open-themed. We welcome papers that engage with any aspect of magical belief, practice, representation, or experience in the pre-modern Nordic and North Atlantic worlds. Particular attention may be given to magic as something lived, practiced, performed, transmitted, or contested within specific social, cultural, and historical contexts.
The language of the conference will be in English and the entire event will take place online to allow for accessibility. Papers should not exceed 20 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of discussion and the opportunity for questions.
We encourage students, early career, established, and independent scholars to participate. If you wish to present a paper, please email an abstract of 250-300 words alongside a short personal biography that includes pronouns, name, area of study and institutional affiliation (if relevant) to performingmagicinthenorth@gmail.com by 1 August 2026.

I just signed the contract for my first monograph, Weather Magic in Medieval Scandinavia, coming in 2026 with Routledge! I’m thrilled to see this project move from PhD to publication so soon, and deeply grateful for the generous peer reviews and support along the way.

Just published - a book chapter in @coffeoglobin.bsky.social @jenhemphill.bsky.social, and Solveig Marie Wang's wonderful new volume on premodern magic. My chapter focuses on how ‘magic’ offers alternatives to normative modes of gender and sexuality in Old Norse sagas ✨ tinyurl.com/PMPN-BAP

This month, I passed my PhD defense! I’m feeling incredibly grateful to my supervisors, Hannah and Ralph, and my family and friends, who’ve given me the much-needed support and encouragement throughout this journey.

Sophie Durbin's video is active! She has kindly recorded what would have been a live online video, if not for the evils of technical difficulties. That being said, all recorded presentations can be found on our YouTube channel!
