What is the purpose of these ads. It’s not as if any us can buy forrestry. One can only conclude that they are buying a softer editorial line from RTE.

The latest thing is to force me to email a verification code every couple of days because I want to read the website I pay for on my iPad, my laptop and my phone. Are they actively trying to make people unsubscribe?

James Howard @jem72.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It really feels like the @nytimes.com doesn't care about its paying customers. After subscribing for several years, I get constant nagging to upgrade to a family subscription which I will never do.

Early Sligo to Connolly also running about 20 minutes late. Driver availability apparently sorry operational reasons.

In Ireland we’ve had to foot a €20million policing bill for the whole charade. And almost nobody wants him here.

That’s not a lot less than I spend on diesel for my car. I run a folding e-bike on sbout €50 of parts a year - tyres and tubes being the most of it. I guess a cargo bike will be more expensive.

James Howard @jem72.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
I wish they wouldn’t exaggerate though. I do my own bike maintenance and can keep a bike in the road for €50 a year. If you’re bringing it to a bike shop probably €250 is more realistic. Doesn’t change the argument but is based on truth.

That’s not what Irish Rail would call a serious delay.

Sadly this appears to be the same everywhere. I was diving in Egypt a couple of months ago for the first time in 25 years and I was shocked at how bad it was. There was one spot where you could really see its former beauty in the bones and it was enough to bring me to tears.

Not a mystery at all when the Dáil has a golf society.

James Howard @jem72.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
I’d also suggest they should be pulled up on their highly misleading advertising.

My local Coillte forest which looks nothing like the ones in the ads mostly blew over in storm Eowyn. Now they are busy replanting it with more Sitka. The very definition of insanity is repeating the same action and expecting different results.

How many years of a reasonable flexible ticket policy could this fund?

James Howard @jem72.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
This is a shocking misuse of public funds. Not condoning but bullshit like this is behind the fuel protests.

How many extra hex wrenches does the world need? I recently got one included in a set of bicycle brake shoes. Who changes their own bicycle brake shoes that is not in possession of adequate tools? Superfluous hex wrenches is a pet peeve of mine.

James Howard @jem72.bsky.social · 07/03/2026
They should stop including them and just allow you to grab one if needed at the checkout. Such a waste. You need to take care not to over-torque if using a drill or impact driver to assemble flat-packs. But is a much easier way.

For the love of God could the @nytimes.com please stop trying to sell me a family subscription. I will never buy it and I'm close to cancelling the one I have because the incessant popups and emails are so annoying.

Close the Dáil car park and see what progress is made. You also forgot to mention deferring the order to replace to totally clapped out 41 year old DART fleet.

And a nice run to Sligo for a 29k as the 0655 down and back up at 1105. Glad I’m not on that.

I had sworn off @adobe.com after the last time they ripped them off but I needed to do something with a pdf and they were the only option. Acrobat is now €20 per month. Luckily I only needed it for one job so I did a free trial. Which still cost me €1.

I’d love to be able to walk or cycle out my gate straight onto a greenway. I’m lucky enough to be able to get into a forest trail after a 500m road walk but a proper greenway would be fantastic.

Unfortunately we’re stuck with things like public transport companies who don’t do updates any other way. I’d given up Twitter before I needed to start commuting by rail again here in Ireland.

Yet in general the Gardai don’t see any reason to stop these vehicles to enquire why they have no registration plate, tax, insurance or licence.

There is absolutely zero enforcement of the legislation on untaxed and uninsured light motorcycles. Deliveroo would be out of business in Dublin if there was.

Agree entirely. We need more trains and journey time reductions. Everything else is secondary.

Lack of catering is a bit of a niche problem and largely affects occasionally users. He seems to have forgotten how godawful the coffee was. Even when there was catering a flask was a much better option.

Getting people to Main Street would be tricky but it would be feasible to get to the secondary schools, main shopping centre and swimming pool with a little creativity.

And to reach a major housing estate they expect children to cross the N4 on a roundabout to access this cycle track.

This is not a model anyone wants to follow. Longford County Council have spent close to 5 years and spent 8 million euro putting in about 4km of cycle track that doesn’t even cover the town centre. As a result they have destroyed any good will towards cycling in the county.

As we're having our usual monthly @irishwater.bsky.social outage, I'd love to only have the average 27 hours per year of water outage. I'd say this year we'll be looking at around ten times that. We've had about 5 days so far this year. www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

I had to cycle to a meeting in a suburban business park today. This is far worse than the city centre. Roundabouts everywhere and literally every car breaking the speed limit. At least in the city centre at rush hour you’re mostly filtering past stopped traffic.

This NYT interview with Bill Gates is just phonomenal. He tells it as it is - the Trump administration (and its "Christian" backers) is killing millions of kids. The contrast with Elon Musk could not be starker. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/m...

This always struck me as an odd site for a new petrol station so close to the much busier Navan road. One wonders how it turns a profit anyway given they are exceptionally cheap for fuel and have no attached convenience store.

Three hours at morning rush hour to put in ‘alternative signalling arrangements’. Any chance anybody is responsible? And the evening down trains will most likely be 30 minutes late because the line speed has decreased to the point where the evening timetable is impossible with earlier delays.

How hard would it have been to charge people based on the number of zones their trip traversed? So a trip entirely within zone 4 costs the same as a trip entirely within zone 1.

This isn’t just about the west. There are still significant numbers without power in the north midlands. Which has been repeatedly hit with power cuts over the last few years. Serious questions need to be asked about grid stability in the northern half of the country.

No phone, no watch, no problem: should we all be more like Severance’s Christopher Walken?
The 81-year-old actor has revealed that he has no streaming services, has never sent an email, and doesn’t even know what time it is. Perhaps he has found true freedom

What amazed me about this story was that Brian Thompson had around 100,000 people working for him - managing the insurance side of the business. And that's just one insurer.
