Happily retired super-nerd. Born in Louisville, then to Lexington, back to Louisville, then to Richmond, back to Lexington, BA in English from UK, started JD, off to San Francisco, finished JD, brief stint in Los Gatos, and finally to Daly City. Whew.

This would cover stuff like Subsistence and Forgery and knowledge of the more feral humanoids, and so on.

The concept is one of liminal adaptability. The word "Marronage" fits the skill-name syntax, but would send every player scrambling for a sociology textbook. (This is where I pretend I -- of course! -- plucked the word from my vocabulary instead of doing a desperate web search.)

I actually think Society is a rare example of a PF2E skill being too broad. It covers so much stuff that half of them are really difficult to ICly justify. I think another skill like, I dunno, Streetwise (though I don't much care for that name) should share the load. There could be some overlap.

Amazon does that *constantly*. I put the things I want in my Wishlist, make an actual note of what I'm willing to pay for it, and then check my Wishlist periodically. I see the prices fluctuate like crazy, including, absolutely, going up before a big "sale."

I think she's underappreciated in general. She's truly fantastic.

That's flattering, but aside from that I (obviously) think it's a good choice. Different players want different experiences, and in a one-shot the PRIMARY way they interface with the entire experience is the PC they play. When the PCs are DRASTICALLY different as a result, the experience suffers.

Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Pre-gen. Not every bad experience I've had in convention one-shots has used BYO PCs, but every single experience in convention one-shots with BYO PCs has been a crappy experience.

I'd love advice on how to respond to these. Especially the second. (The responses to the first are pretty obvious, but also seem to be very unconvincing to them.)

Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I've gotten two different responses: "I'm just not as good at it as you, so I feel like I'm letting people down." "I prefer to pretend that the world fully exists, and my PC inhabits it, and that gets wonky when I'm actively creating part of the world."

You know, I really try to do this, but with very mixed results. In my online homebrew, I have one player who love doing it, and another who'll take the reins occasionally, to create an NPC or a narrative moment. In my in-person games, my players go fully *tharn*. I've gently asked about it.

Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Again, this has nothing to do with the PF2E system. (IMO, it has much, much more to do with online play. I'm not the biggest fan.)
120
Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
In my personal experience with online games (as a player), GMs, and sometimes other players, focus very strongly on "getting to the next battlemat." Interestingly, I've also seen online players get stuck with the opposite problem, where they seem afraid to actually commit to doing anything.

Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Do you say what you DO want to do? If so, and they ignore it, then their behavior is again weird, and has nothing to do with the system. If not, then how long do they need to wait for you to tell them what you want to do or where you want to go?
110
Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
As far as the SYSTEM goes, it's much, much more efficient to keep and distribute useable loot rather than sell it. And that's even assuming that unlimited "magic shops" exist. If they don't, selling many (but not all) magic items is dumb ... because of how the system works. It costs the group value.

Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
As Shades Corvid said, that's table custom/culture, not the system. And it actually IS more fair, but this is one of those very rare cases where "more fair" is also STUPID. My PF tables do try to keep loot fairly well balanced, but that's over the course of a few levels, not over one adventure.

Yeah, I'll only drop even the barest hints if it's ultimately okay for the narrative that the PCs figure out the traitor NPC might not be a good person. If it's really intended to be a dramatic betrayal, the PCs need to really like and trust the NPC, and that means "no hints."
130
Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Unwarranted (mild) terseness or mistreatment of minor NPCs (like servers or bartenders). Usually I have the traitor NPC immediately offer an apology or excuse and let the PCs decide if it's believable or excusable. You shouldn't overdo the traitor NPC's behavior, IMO, because players WILL catch on.

Sounds like you're a great VTT GM. They seem to be incredibly rare.
110
Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah, just give me the battlemat and virtual dice, and I'm good. Like you said, you're definitely allowed to want more, but I'd gently urge you to be objective about what it might be actively taking away from your games.

They also get incredibly wrapped up, during the game, in explaining the features, making sure they work, troubleshooting when they don't, and trying to teach the features. And, again, this is 100% of my experiences as a player in these games. Including paid games. Not worth it.
100
Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I get it, but my experience with GMs using "full-featured" VTTs has been that they completely rely on the "features" at the expense of immersion, including roleplaying and description.

ALIEN. I was 11 years old, and my friend (9) and I saw it at the Kentucky Theater, by ourselves. The airduct scene nearly stopped my heart. But I LOVED that film, and still do.

I expected to like "The Invite." I did not expect to love it. It is fantastic. It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Olivia Wilde is absolutely incredible. I had no idea. NO idea. I feel like I owe her an apology for not realizing how talented and ridiculously hilarious she is.

Love it, love it, love it! My group is a couple of levels above yours, and I have a LOT of extra Sandpoint materials I've created. (My most recent creation is the four-stanza poem "Ilvarandin"!) If interested, DM me and I can share the Google Docs file.

I brought this up in Con Law in 2000, and my professor (who is, in general, someone I still greatly respect) responded like I was some kinda fringe weirdo. Many people still misunderstand when I opine about the dumbness of Roe v. Wade: the question never even should have gotten that far.

As with almost everything PF2E, in addition to the excellent answers below, the whole "keyword/trait" thing is future-proofing. I could easily see rules (spells, feats, whatever) that deliberately interact with SLOW or STUN, but not with the other.

Folks interested in RPGing in-person, helpful to mention the games you prefer and where you are. (For bonus points, a little brag about how reliable you are when it comes to social commitments would be good, too.) My in-person group is always open to new members. #SFBayArea #PF1E #PF2E #ALIENRPG

I'm a hopeless dice-goblin, but, still: remember the old Dragonbone? (This is not a porn or furry post, Bluesky!) The Dragonbone was SO COOL. Mine was red! And now I have so many other cool alternative dice: dice rings, spinners (tower, cubes, disc, card, roulette-style, collapsible)! I love dice!

My initial response was a bewildered, "Of course?" I mostly stick by that, but there are certain mid-tier quests, that, if failed, create a REAL headache and a LOT of work for a GM. Weirdly, the picayune quests AND the end-of-the-world quests can both be disasters without creating that problem ...

Google something like "normal structure for payment in a plaintiff civil victory" for more details.

I can't speak for this specific firm, but 35% of a settlement or liability payment is pretty normal, as are expenses and other costs (on top). The amount is usually negotiable, and verify the representation is willing to pursue fees and costs from the losing party if warranted.

My second-favorite is Roleplayer, and my third favorite is Lorekeeper/Crafter. My in-person group has a couple each of Tacticians and Rules Lawyers. We have a Chaos Agent, but the Tacticians unfortunately quash his chaotic tendencies. Our Quiet One is also the Lorekeeper.

My favorite is the "Move Along" player. For whatever reason -- not often, but sometimes -- the players just can't or won't make a decision as to what to do. That's when a Move Along player is invaluable. It's the closest to what I am; I mix other player types in pretty equal measure.

I liked this one quite a bit. In general, actually, I liked all the Eberron novels more than any other fantasy RPG novels. (Some of Stackpole's Shadowrun books were really good, too.)

I think flying stands help, and we use them at our table, but we combine them with altitude-by-die. The stand just helps everybody remember that, yeah, THAT summonabitch is up in the air. BTW, Medium flying stands are pretty cheap: check out Litko.

Jeff Wilder @jeffwilder.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, exactly, but if you don't want to use "flying stands," you can use dice (d12s work well, as they aren't used for much). "Multiply the die by 5 feet for height above the forest floor."

Me, too, and my in-person group has been rotating GMs with it for 17 straight years of Saturday sessions, but holy Christ is it a nightmare to GM at 12th+ level.
