Some reflections from Climate Week NYC for Handelsblatt, ahead of their Corporate Climate Adaptation conference in Düsseldorf. Resilience is an unpriced asset. The returns are well documented, but they land on society rather than on the ledger of whoever we are asking to write the check.

At a UNGA81 side event on delivering the Sendai Framework in ASEAN, I put forward three priorities: move resources before the event, treat social capital as infrastructure, and own the evidence base. With the successor to Sendai coming fast, my advice to the region was simple. Bring a draft.

Spoke with Kate Waxman at Inside Climate News on what a strong El Niño winter means for Florida's 830,000 manufactured homes, most predating the 1994 standards. Mobile home residents are 15 to 20 times more likely to die in a tornado. You pay for it now or you pay for it later.

Spoke with Agatha Khishchenko at The Times of Israel about corporate teams deploying into quake response. Nonprofit and EM technology is generations behind, and the barriers are procurement and security review, not talent. But the wrong reasons ultimately lead to bad outcomes.

Twenty-Five Years After September 11th, 2001, New York City Changed the Way We Prepare for Disasters - National Center for Disaster Preparedness | NCDP
Twenty-five years after September 11th, 2001, it is still difficult to contemplate what happened without first thinking about the people. The firefighters and police officers who ran toward the World Trade Center, the emergency managers and health professionals trying to make sense of an unconceivable situation, the transit workers helping people evacuate Lower Manhattan, and … Continue reading "Twenty-Five Years After September 11th, 2001, New York City Changed the Way We Prepare for Disasters"

NOAA puts the odds of a very strong El Niño above 90%, and nearly 70% that it is the strongest since 1950. We can see this one coming months out. Our systems are still built to respond to disasters, not anticipate them. My piece in The Hill on what we can do in time.

I joined Yalda Hakim on Sky News on the flooding in Nepal, and the workers still missing inside the hydropower tunnels. After an event like this we ask whether responders were ready. We should also ask how to prevent disasters in the future. But for now, rescue is the priority.

Making it through the physical impacts of a disaster does not mean you are out of the woods. In a new study of 3,971 U.S. workers, distress tracked most closely with disrupted safety and social services. Public-sector workers were the most sensitive. doi.org/10.1016/j.shaw.2026.08.005
