I like so many things about this. Complementary to LLMs, not just another model, same interface. Do one thing, but do it well. Really hoping that it works well. typesafe.ai

Ooof. That GPT-6 Astra announcement page really turns the "Dazzle Dial" up to 11. I can't even.

I asked ChatGPT to summarize HN comments, somewhere in which someone quoted Dune and that killed ChatGPT. Was it the copyright (quote is fair use) or the content that ChatGPT found objectionable? 🤔

Dune / Butlerian Jihad

lambdaone references Dune and quotes Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam:

Are we in the Enterprise Java Beans era of agent architecture?

"Feedback is all you need" feels like the central dogma for agents. Adding one word to the @simonwillison.net agent definition: "An LLM agent runs tools in a *feedback* loop to achieve a goal."

Went to a talk on cookbooks and food from a queer perspective at @omnivorebooks.bsky.social tonight. What a cool and cute bookstore. Great talk. Ended up winning a gorgeous Smithy cast iron pan in the raffle. How appropriate since cooking is my love language and my boyfriend's love is pancakes.

I'm fascinated by the Claude Code leak. A low impact, easily reversible micro decision was also a high impact, irreversible macro decision. I have questions. What did that decision process look like? Where does accountability lie and what does it look like? Eagerly awaiting a public post-mortem.

One definition of Software Architecture is "The parts that are hard to change." Transitioning from "hard to change" to "easy to change" is a major advancement. Perhaps we're seeing a new configuration of what is Architecture and what is not? React: Architecture no more? (When enabled by tests?)

Based on experience, I believe the captions on these photos have been reversed in this version of @buzzfeed.com's daily "98 vaguely thematic things we hope you will buy" listicle.
Two photos of a velvet surface, one with cat hair, labeled "before" and one without cat hair and a brush labeled "10 seconds later."

Standard Facebook Interview Question: “Design Facebook News Feed, including the backend”

iOS Developer Answer: “I don’t care about the backend”

Interview Notes: “1) TC does not understand basic Computer Science concepts. 2) TC has a bad attitude. Rejection!”

One problem with the Viable System Model is that every article has to use 80% of its word budget to re-explain it, badly. Language like “system 3*” and “algedonic” creates a low r0 meme-deficiency. Is the lack of accessible pedagogy a fundamental property of the VSM or can it be overcome?

Ignoble research idea: What percentage of business articles contain a variation of the phrase "In today's changing environment?" Key aspects: (1) Now (2) The World (3) Changes. How has the use of this phrase changed over time? Hypothesis: use is constant over time.

I was reading an article and tripped on a sentence that suggested that a "detrimental VP" should observe, but not participate when invited to a team meeting. Upon re-reading, I realized the author actually wrote "departmental VP." 🙄🤷‍♂️

The most complimented dish of this year's Thanksgiving was just an easy last minute filler dish. 3 shallots, chopped, sautéed, 24 oz frozen peas heated with a little bit of broth. Finished with salt, pepper, butter and a generous amount of fresh chopped mint. 🤷‍♂️

My autumnal fruits in sauternes gelee had the kinetic effect I was looking for and was certainly the most discussed dish of this year's Thanksgiving.

Planned it out today to make an old school looking gelatin mold for Thanksgiving, but an updated taste. Instead of fruit cocktail in Jello, I'm going with autumnal fruits (apple, pear, persimmon and pomegranate) in a sauternes and apple juice gelatin. No chance to practice. Hope it turns out. 🤞

The person I've been helping with burnout thanked me last night and told me I was helping. He said the most helpful was helping him recognize that he was burned out, showing him how it was affecting his relationships with people and reinforcing that it was not a personal failure.

Advice to someone dealing with burnout: Powering through the day is counterproductive. Take periodic restorative breaks to be more effective: Detach from work. Do something relaxing with a low activation level. Learn or master something new. Control your own time during your break. Helpful?

I'm excited to see things taking off for Bluesky. I exited "the other place" shortly after the takeover. But I did not exit to something else. Choose your forever server on Mastodon was a barrier for me and I've been happier FB free for years. So, high hopes to be here.
