The 1990 Cleary Act mandating reporting- first explained to me in 1992 by a town cop by my campus when one of my advisees was raped and I sat with her after her rape kit. He explained to me why the Dean of student life was probably mad at me for not steering the survivor through the campus process

And yes, WTF? Schools tell women not to go forward because the rapists’ lawyers will put them through it. It’s one of the ways they discourage reporting. I tried fight this fight as a student, grad student, and employee for 2 years. You’ve got 5600 schools and all of them handle cases internally

None of them do, or will. And yes I was a school admin. And as a student and graduate student I fought two different administrations on how they shouldn’t handle rape internally and didn’t get a job once because I helped a woman go to the hospital for a rape kit instead of calling the dean first.

As rape is the most common felony committed on every college campus and some schools have their own police and most just have campus security, and no school wants data showing 100 rapes on campus every year (add in survivors being reminded of the pitfalls of pressing charges)… what can we do?

Important to remember that: 1) rape is common on every campus 2) college administrators are not qualified to conduct criminal investigations 3) they investigate sexual assault internally anyway cause universities are required to report crime stats universities don’t want to report all their rapes

I’ve been saying for 20 years that taxes need a PR campaign. Conservatives break things, tell you government is broken, and then cut taxes, making things more broken. This is the antidote. Not just an awesome Mayor, but letting people know their tax dollars are working as they should.

I’m 53. The last 43 years have been really shitty. The 2025 and 2026 have to be the shittiest, right up there with 1988, but maybe worse because 2023 and 2024 were so fun. I’m ready to let go of this summer but mainly if it means they can fire those responsible now.
