Oil money and Trump: Chevron gave $2M and Exxon $1M to Trump's 2025 inaugural fund. No direct corporate super PAC gifts found. A Chevron board member and his wife gave $2M personally to MAGA Inc. Exxon's PAC gave the RNC $45K in 2026. Sources: FEC, Global Witness, MS NOW. Great investment.
Net margins for ExxonMobil and Chevron roughly doubled or tripled in Q2 2026, the first full quarter of the war.

Here's the latest.
Employers added 29,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent, federal data showed on Friday, slower than expected growth for a labor market that had shown greater-than-expected strength in recent months.
That resiliency has stood in tension with the strain of higher prices as inflation has marched higher since the start of the war in Iran. For most workers, wages haven't kept up. Growth in average hourly earnings fell to 3 percent on an annual basis in September, well below the current rate of inflation, and the slowest since the depths of the pandemic. Employment gains for July and August were also revised down by a combined 60,000 jobs.

The diagram I mentioned
The use of terms depends on context; words and phrases can be grouped into geographical, political, linguistic and sporting terms. In brief, the main terms and their simple explanations are as follows:

Geographical terms:
The British Isles is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Continental Europe. It includes Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man, Shetland, Orkney and thousands of smaller islands. Traditionally the Channel Islands are included, though they are geographically closer to mainland continental Europe, off the French coast of Normandy. This, in part, has resulted in the term being disputed.[2]
Great Britain is the largest island of the archipelago.[3]
Ireland is the second-largest island of the archipelago and lies directly to the west of Great Britain. The island of Ireland itself has its own offshore islands.
The full list of islands of the British Isles includes over 6,000 islands, of which 51 have an area larger than 20 km2 (7.7 sq mi).[4]
Political terms:
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the parliamentary constitutional monarchy occupying the island of Great Britain, the small nearby islands (but not the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands), and the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland. Usually, it is shortened to the United Kingdom or the UK, or Britain.[5] Great Britain is sometimes used as a short form and is the name used by the UK in some international organisations.[6] The abbreviation GB is frequently used for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in international agreements, e.g. Universal Postal Union and Road Traffic Convention, as well as in the ISO 3166 country codes (GB and GBR). England was also formerly used synecdochically to refer to the whole United Kingdom but this usage became rare early in the 20th century (though it persists in other languages).
Ireland is the sovereign republic occupying the larger portion of the island of Ireland. To distinguish the state…

To be fair, it is a little complicated
Map titled 'Terminology of the British Isles' from Encyclopaedia Britannica, showing four nested colored outlines over the UK and Ireland: red for the British Isles (includes both islands), navy for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), purple for Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales only), and green for Ireland (Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland). Labels mark London, Dublin, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands, with a distance scale in miles and kilometers.

Here's a timeline of Trump's threats against Iran, drawing on his public statements from early 2025 through this week.

Feb 2025 — Signed National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 (NSPM-2), directing "maximum pressure" on Iran through sanctions, diplomacy, and legal action to force it to abandon its nuclear program and support for terrorist groups.
Mar 30, 2025 — Threatens bombing unless new nuclear deal reached.

Dec 29, 2025 — "We'll knock the hell out of them."

Late Jan 2026 — Could attack "with speed and violence"; "massive armada" heading to Iran.

Feb 28, 2026 — U.S./Israel strikes begin (Operation Epic Fury / Roaring Lion).

Mar 2, 2026 — "We projected four to five weeks, but we have capability to go far longer than that."

Mar 21, 2026 — 48-hr ultimatum: "the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!"

Mar 22, 2026 — "Total decimation of Iran."

Mar 23, 2026 — Extends deadline 5 days; "very good and productive conversations."

Mar 30, 2026 — Will "completely obliterate" electric plants, oil wells, Kharg Island.

Apr 7, 2026 — "A whole civilization will die tonight."

Jun 11, 2026 — U.S. forces would hit Iran "VERY HARD TONIGHT," also "taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points." Hours later, cancels strikes.

Aug 1, 2026 — "Locked and loaded and ready" to attack "at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II"; then calls it off.

Aug 2–3, 2026 — Calls Iran "unbelievably duplicitous" after it denies resumed talks.

Sails on the Potomac. Tall Ships visited Alexandria, VA this past weekend as part of #alexandria250 celebrations. #sail250. See alt text for details about each ship. #photography
Gazela – Barkentine, 140 feet long on deck
The Gazela is the oldest and largest ship at Sails on the Potomac. She was built in Portugal in 1883. The Gazela fished in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, Canada until 1969, when she was retired due to damage. Since the 1970s, she has served as an educational vessel in Philadelphia.Sultana – Schooner, 52 feet long on deck
The Sultana is a full-scale reproduction of a Royal Navy schooner that served in the American colonies from 1768 to 1772. She played a role in the rising tensions between the British and Americans on the eve of the Revolution. In 1768, Sultana transported thousands of troops to Boston to subdue rebellious colonists. She also patrolled the Atlantic Coast to enforce the Townsend Acts and search ship cargos.Providence – Sloop, 61 feet long on deck
The Providence, originally named the Katy, is a reproduction of one of the first ships in the Continental Navy. The Katy was a merchant ship, whaler, privateer, and flagship of the Rhode Island Navy. The Providence had a distinguished record in the Revolutionary War, including seizing more than 40 ships, capturing Fort Nassau in the Bahamas, and escaping a British blockade.

You don't have to catch the Providence today, it's home ported here in Alexandria and is attached to a bar!Kalmar Nyckel – Dutch Pinnace, 93 feet long on deck
The Kalmar Nyckel is a full-scale, accurate reproduction of a ship that served alternatingly as a colonial vessel and a warship in the Swedish Navy. In 1638, Swedish colonists in the Kalmar Nyckel arrived in Lenape land that became Delaware. Since 1997, the ship has served as a floating classroom to teach maritime heritage and history.

And the next 5
Bottom 5 radar chart:
Radar chart scoring the five lowest-ranked US fighter jets across six axes: performance, mission fit, air-to-air combat record, tech innovation, public love, and peer superiority. The F/A-18 Hornet shows the fullest shape of the group, peaking on mission fit — it remains in active service precisely because it does its job well. The F-86 Sabre and F-8 Crusader overlap heavily, both earning respectable air-to-air scores built on Korea and Vietnam records that don't survive full statistical scrutiny. The F-4 Phantom II spikes on peer superiority, reflecting how dominant it was when introduced, but its air-to-air score of 2 is a direct consequence of the kill ratio that created the Top Gun program. The F-11 Tiger is barely visible at the center of the chart — low scores across every axis, included here as a monument to Grumman brand loyalty over objective merit. F/A-18, F-86, and F-4 tie at 22 points; F-8 scores 20; F-11 scores 10.Bottom 5 score table:
Score table for the bottom five US fighter jets rated 1–5 across six axes. F/A-18 Hornet, F-86 Sabre, and F-4 Phantom II tie at 22 points. The Hornet leads the group on performance and mission fit; the F-86 and F-8 Crusader share the same air-to-air score of 4, reflecting strong but unverifiable kill ratios from Korea and Vietnam respectively. The F-4 Phantom's peer superiority score of 5 is its only standout — it was genuinely revolutionary when introduced but its Vietnam air-to-air record of 2 directly inspired the creation of the Navy Fighter Weapons School. F-8 Crusader scores 20 with no axis above 4. The F-11 Tiger scores 10 — the lowest total on either chart, with no score above 2 and an air-to-air record of 1, included on TomcatJunkie's original list by his own admission due to Grumman bias.

The F-15 Eagle is the only jet to score a 5 on air-to-air, reflecting its 104-0 all-time record. The F-14 Tomcat's only standout is public love, driven almost entirely by Top Gun. The F-16 Falcon and F-35 Lightning II show the most balanced shapes, with no dramatic spikes or gaps. F-15 and F-14 tie at 26 points; F-16 scores 25; F-22 and F-35 tie at 24.Top 5 score table:
Score table for the top five US fighter jets rated 1–5 across six axes. F-15 Eagle and F-14 Tomcat tie at 26 points. F-15 leads on air-to-air with the only score of 5 on the chart, reflecting an undefeated combat record. F-14 leads on public love, also scoring 5, reflecting its cultural footprint from Top Gun. F-16 Falcon scores 25 with no axis below 4 — the most consistent profile on the chart. F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II tie at 24; both score 5 on tech innovation, but the F-22's air-to-air score of 2 reflects a career spent shooting down surveillance balloons rather than enemy fighters.

Filled in as guest host on this week's Headlines Show for @nonetakenpod.bsky.social -- U.S.-Iran ceasefire theater, voting rights losses, inflation at a 3-year high, and more. Listen wherever you get podcasts or at nonetakenpod.com
Jeff Hancock and Allan Smith recording the video portion of the None Taken podcast - sign up at https://www.patreon.com/c/NoneTakenPod/posts to watch the video

Here's a brief summary of some of the stories we covered:

War & Diplomacy: The U.S.-Iran ceasefire is effectively a fiction at this point, exchanges of fire near Hormuz, Trump calling Iran's peace proposal "garbage," and the ceasefire now described as "on massive life support." Meanwhile Trump is in Beijing with Musk and Jensen Huang for a Xi summit, and Rubio flew to the Vatican to smooth things over after Trump attacked the Pope. Russia-Ukraine had a three-day ceasefire that both sides immediately accused each other of violating.

Courts & Democracy: A rough week for voting rights the Supreme Court's 6-3 majority cleared Alabama's likely-VRA-violating map, Virginia's Supreme Court killed a voter-approved redistricting reform, and a federal judge left Trump's FBI holding Georgia 2020 election records. South Carolina was the lone bright spot, where five Republicans broke ranks to kill a gerrymandering push.

Economy: Not great. CPI hit a three-year high at 3.8%, PPI blew past estimates at 6% annually, and gas prices are up 50%+ since the Iran war started. Trump's response is to float suspending the federal gas tax, which funds highways.

Odds & Ends: DOJ charged two companies over the Key Bridge collapse, a second set of Trump tariffs was ruled unlawful, an Epstein note was unsealed, a hantavirus cruise ship returned home, and China literally changed how they spell "Rubio" to get him into the country.

Claude and I worked to find an indicator and a representation that would show the divide between the S&P and the economy. We settled on consumer sentiment. They used to track well but have really gone off the rails during the two Trump administrations See alt text for an explanation
When markets and consumer confidence move in opposite directions, something is broken. This chart shows that disconnect has never been wider than right now.
Three stacked bar charts show annual % change in UMich Consumer Sentiment and the S&P 500 from 2001–2026, color-coded by relationship: blue = both up, amber = both down, red = S&P up while sentiment down, green = sentiment up while S&P down.
Top panel shows the divergence spread (S&P minus sentiment in percentage points). Near zero through most of 2001–2019. From 2021 onward red bars grow progressively taller, with 2025–2026 the largest gap on record — S&P up ~26% while sentiment fell ~16%.
Middle panel: UMich Consumer Sentiment % change. Through the dot-com crash and Great Recession, sentiment and markets fell together (amber). They recovered together through the 2010s (blue). Since 2021, sentiment has failed to recover while markets climbed — sustained red.
Bottom panel: S&P 500 % change. Strong gains most years after 2009, accelerating even as sentiment deteriorated.
The historical norm: crises hurt both. The current anomaly: record high market, record low consumer confidence — moving in opposite directions for four consecutive years.
2026 is partial-year (May preliminary). Sources: UMich Surveys of Consumers; S&P 500 annual closing levels.

Restart Game
1D-Chess
1d-chess is a new variant where you can play the beautiful game without all those unneccessary and complicated extra dimensions. Play as white against the AI. You might initally find it more difficult than expected, but assming optimal play, is there a forced win for white?

Mouse over to reveal answer: Try this line: N4 N5, N6 K7, R4 K6, R2 K7, R5++

Rules
There are three pieces in 1d-chess:

King:
Can move one square in any direction.

Knight:
Can move 2 squares forward or backward. (jumping over any pieces in the way)

Rook:
Can move in a straight line in any direction.

Win by checkmating the enemy king. This occurs when the enemy king is in check (under attack by one of your pieces) and there are no legal moves for the opponent to get their king out of check.

Careful! A draw can occur if:

A player is not in check and there are no legal moves for them to play (Stalemate)
The same board position is repeated 3 times in a game. (3 Fold Repetition)
There are only kings left on the board, thus it is impossible to checkmate the opponent (Insufficient Material)
Credits
This chess variant was first described by Martin Gardner in the Mathematical Games column of the July 1980 issue of Scientific American

This is an interview from an Italian newspaper (looks like Corriere della Sera) with Tom Nichols, the Atlantic writer, conducted by Massimo Gaggi. The headline reads:
"The tycoon has no plan. He improvises and threatens, but the regime won't give in"
Essayist Nichols: he is the sole responsible party for the war
Key points from the interview:
On Trump: "For the first time he finds himself inside a serious crisis, in a situation he has no control over. He has no plans — he improvises, threatens, then grants a truce. He follows his instincts. And he has no one around him who can advise, help, or stop him, as happened in his first term."
On the war: Nichols says Trump thought he could wrap it up quickly, then started talking about weeks, promising a rapid return to normal gas prices. Now his Energy Secretary says a significant drop won't come until next year — after the midterms.
On Iran: "He's trapped himself, alone, against a regime that has nothing to lose and has the Strait of Hormuz as a deterrent."
On China: "China can't believe its eyes — U.S. credibility with its adversary is compromised without them lifting a finger. Beijing becomes a stable reference point even for Gulf countries."
On U.S. elections: "A year ago I feared Trump much more than I do today. But the electoral system is in the hands of individual states — what can he actually do? Send ICE to the polls?"
Quite a rich piece — Nichols is essentially saying Trump stumbled into a war he can't win and can't exit cleanly, and China is the quiet beneficiary of the whole mess.

KJV version of what they were going for
14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord God.

15 Thus saith the Lord God; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred;

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast.

17 And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

Top: "The Big Stick in the Caribbean Sea" by William Allen Rogers, published in the New York Herald around 1904. You can see Rogers' signature "W.A.R." in the lower left.
It depicts TR as a giant wading through the Caribbean, big stick raised, leading a line of U.S. gunboats labeled things like "The Receiver," "Debt Collector," and "The Sheriff" — with Santo Domingo, Cuba, Panama, and Mexico visible around the shoreline. It's a direct visual commentary on the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.

Bottom: Generated by my prompt to ideogram.ai
Three-panel political cartoon strip, vintage newspaper illustration style, minimalist color, same aesthetic as early 1900s editorial cartoons.
Panel 1: Donald Trump in exaggerated caricature swinging a large wooden club labeled "BIG STICK" at a figure representing Iran. Trump looks smug and triumphant.
Panel 2: Trump dwarfed by an enormous wooden club he can barely hold, labeled "BIGGER STICK." The top of the club is shaped like a mushroom cloud. Trump has a wide boastful grin and a speech bubble that reads "I HAVE THE BIGGEST STICK."
Panel 3: Trump sitting contentedly, eating a giant taco the same size as the club from panel 1. His expression is blissful. No stick in sight.
All three panels are equal width, horizontal strip format, clean panel borders, consistent caricature of Trump across all panels.
The three panels can be whatever height is necessary, but their width should match the reference image. Do not include the reference image, I will assemble the final product myself.
