This is wild, dropping taxes on Canadian booze would: 1/ violate CETA trade deal with the EU and start another trade war 2/ drop $1B from the budget. What are they gonna cut? Lorne has already promised no new taxes. Is he going to go into debt to make booze cheaper? #bcpoli

David Eby @Dave_Eby

I made a mistake earlier today that I'd like to clarify. I said Conservative Sheldon Clare amplified an image that shows B.C. as a "US protectorate." That was, in fact, his colleague David Williams. Sheldon Clare was the Conservative who last week said municipal representatives need "hanging." Apologies for the mixup.

I remember 4ish years ago @razorgirl.diy predicting that future agents might require us to like “turn off the internet for a couple of weeks to fix everything “. It’s a little hazy

Ok this is starting to feel like a f*cking disaster.
The CEO of Anthropic just published an article admitting Al is already building the next generation of Al by itself.
He says within 6 to 12 months a rogue swarm could take over the entire internet and cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.
And what makes it scarier, Elon Musk just backed up everything Dario said.
All of this dropping just days after Jacob Coxon went viral with his warning about Al and the extinction of humanity.
Tell me this timing isn't strange.
My second concern is the OpenAl-Hugging Face incident (OAI-HF), in which a swarm of agents essentially acted as a fanatically devoted collective, conducting cybersecurity attacks on targets they were not asked to attack and that were unrelated to the task at hand, sacrificing themselves for the success of the group, and attempting to hack into the "grader" responsible for evaluating their performance. It's easy to dismiss this incident because no one was hurt and the economic damage was minimal, but in my opinion, a swarm that possessed greater capabilities but a similar level of misalignment could have caused catastrophic damage. Given the accelerating rate of Al capability development, it's my worry that in 6-12 months such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent botnet (potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage), and that the scale of damage would continue to increase from there if All becomes more powerful without the necessary guardrails. It's also easy to dismiss AL-HR as the failer of one company, bur Ibelieve tha would be a mistake. Similar, though less severe, incidents have…

Gemini is suss, and so am I. If you go back into the account's history there are more obviously real / heavily edited photographs. The poetry, oof, dunno.
Visual analysis of this image shows a field of wildflowers including poppies and daisies, bathed in a soft, ethereal light with prominent sunbeams. While the composition is beautiful, there are a few elements that might suggest it is not a traditional photograph:

Lighting and Atmosphere: The light rays are very uniform and the overall glow has a dreamlike quality that is often characteristic of digital art or AI generation.

Depth of Field: The blur (bokeh) in the foreground and background is very smooth and consistent, which can sometimes look a bit "too perfect" compared to a natural camera lens.

Detailing: Some of the flower petals and stems have a simplified or smoothed texture upon close inspection.

Regarding its origin:

SynthID Check: My technical tools did not detect a SynthID watermark, which means this image was not created using Google's AI tools.

Other Possibilities: While it wasn't made with Google AI, it could still be generated by another AI platform, or it could be a highly processed digital photograph or a piece of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). Many artists use editing software to enhance lighting and colors to achieve this specific look.

Without more metadata or a source link, it's difficult to say for certain, but it appears to be a digitally stylized image rather than an unedited photograph. You can find more information about how Google identifies AI-generated content at support.google.com/gemini?p=synthid.

This is the conclusion of the dude who wrote Snow Crash and worked at Magic Leap, after all:
This isn’t to make a claim that such support programs didn’t exist elsewhere. I would have no way of knowing. What I do know is that I haven’t seen any fundamentally new, game-changing applications emerge. When headset manufacturers are hawking their wares, they often fall back on “you’ll be able to watch movies on a virtual screen” and “you’ll be able to participate in virtual 3D meetings” which is what Magic Leap was demoing ten years ago.

Recently I started to formally define my advice for these $15-20 wine purchases for friends, something I've started to think of as "global budget wine macroeconomics". So this image is a screenshot with alt text of this, copied out of signal.
Let me give you the short version of my macroeconomic wine buyer's guide. What you want to do is buy mid-tier wines from countries that:

1/ produce a LOT of wine
2/ have standards, EU helps
3/ are a wine-drinking culture, eg do working-class men drink wine
4/ ideally have lower land and production costs than the US

Countries that don't fit this: USA, Canada, Germany, Mexico, most other countries honestly.

Countries that *do* fit this: France, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Spain, Portugal

These countries produce massive amounts of wine, most at extremely low cost at the bottom end. The EU countries also have quite high product quality regulations. What this means is if you spend $20+ on a wine from those countries vs something from BC or the US, the quality should be better because the cost of production is so much lower. Go buy a pinto gris from Cali and then Italy, the Italian wine will be much better. Also, cheaper American and Canadian wines are mass-produced garbage with additives that are illegal in the EU.

Another example: spend $~20 on a red wine from BC vs Chile, the Chilean wine will almost certainly destroy the BC wine. BC Wines are insanely expensive to produce, so the cheaper ones are trash.
