Naples is almost impossible to take in all at once. My wide panoramic photographs don’t solve that problem – they let me keep some of the problem in the picture. My newest At Home in Time post: “Too Much to Take In.”

I’ve never been particularly interested in pretending I’m invisible when I photograph people. What interests me is what happens when someone looks back. “When Someone Looks Back” – on portraits, attention, and the exchange that happens on both sides of the camera.

In Naples, football doesn’t just inspire loyalty. It borrows the language of faith. Four Scudetti, flags for the players who helped bring them home, saints and flowers – and, in the middle of it all, a tiny funeral shrine for F.C. Inter. Contro tutto e tutti. Against everything and everyone.

The trips when I had a camera stayed with me differently from the trips when I didn’t. This week’s At Home in Time is about photographs, stories, and the way the two work together to give memory somewhere to live.

23 years after photographing the Duomo di Siracusa with a 4×5 view camera, I went back to make the photograph again. The columns were still there. My old camera position wasn’t. This week’s At Home in Time is about revisiting a familiar subject.

In Naples, life, art and commerce pile up on the same walls and spill into the same streets – a cook on a smoke break, a saint’s poster, a painted bird, someone pausing to make a call. The city seems to make very little distinction between what is useful, beautiful, or simply happening.

There’s a moment near the end of the day when Cortona begins to let go of the light. For the ninth installment of my Cortona Passeggiata series, I photographed that fleeting bit of time I love most – the last light of the day in this Tuscan hill town. New photographs and words on At Home in Time.

Not the view – the glimpse of it. I keep finding that the withheld part of a picture is what makes me stay. Show me everything and I’m done looking. Show me a sliver and I’m still there an hour later, filling in the rest badly and enjoying it.

Venice is a city built on movement – tides, wakes, rain, reflections, boats and changing light. My latest At Home in Time post looks at what happens when you stop trying to photograph Venice as a collection of beautiful places and start paying attention to the water that holds it all together.

In Italy… a stairway leading upward, a path narrowing toward a door, a passage disappearing around a corner. Sometimes the possibility of what lies on the other side is more interesting than actually finding out.

Perfect light in Venice is overrated. A rainy day slows the pace just enough that movement becomes visible. People hurry, but the water listens, and the city keeps floating exactly as it always has. #RainyVenice #CanalReflections #AtmosphericPhotography #PhotographyOfPlace

New this week on At Home in Time: I went looking for texture in Neapolitan walls and found much more. Walls that hold traces of faith, football, politics, romance, loss, and everyday life - posters pasted over posters, graffiti crossing older graffiti, repairs added whenever they were needed.

For Cortona’s Gruppo Storico sbandieratori, motion is the whole point. Performing in defiance of gravity and stillness, they create intricate displays rooted in centuries of neighborhood pride. The blur isn’t a mistake of the shutter – it’s the subject. Watching them, the past becomes present again.

Venice is always in motion. Slow motion. Boats pass. Conversations continue. Blue hour settles quietly over the canal. Stand in one place long enough, and the city reveals how it moves.

Venice rewards those who slow down. Step away from the crowds and the noise drops. The canals go still enough to hold the whole city upside down – brick, shutters, sky. Reflection is Venice’s quiet trick. The city doubles itself in water that barely moves.

In the late 1970s, I memorized a slide for an art history exam: Fra Angelico. Annunciation. Cortona. Around 1433. Cortona might as well have been fictional then. Now I live a five-minute walk from the painting. New on Substack – on how information becomes experience.

Venice rearranges itself every few seconds. Walls bend, windows dissolve, entire buildings become color and line. Looking down instead of up, the city feels less fixed, more like memory than architecture. Photography, for me, is the act of noticing these brief alignments before they disappear again.
