That's genuinely disturbing. US states with the death penalty have had numerous cases in recent years in which death penalty drugs have tortured people horribly before killing them, but I've never heard of a case where the recipient just didn't die.

My guess is that AI actors don't catch on save as a niche. It's like chess. We've had, for years now, chess machines that can annihilate even the best human players. It's been 30 years since Deep Blue beat Kasparov. Yet more humans play chess than ever. Watching robots play robots just isn't fun.
