“(Narrator) Fortgang builds tension with measured accents, sometimes dipping into playful cadences.” /2 of 2 Review site: www.kirkusreviews.com/.../jeff.../...

Lauren Fortgang narrates a taut thriller as a disgraced spy and a rookie bodyguard converge on a secretive Texas town, not knowing they’re chasing the same missing man. January tracks the traitor who sold out her agency to Lethey, Texas, while July’s only client has disappeared. Fortgang’s low tone and leisurely pacing give the secluded town an increasingly claustrophobic feeling. Interviews with townspeople pull listeners in as the mystery deepens. Fortgang builds tension with measured accents, sometimes dipping into playful cadences. The final stretch speeds up and crescendos with a thrilling resolution, with January and July a capable pair of leads.

Fortgang’s bright and measured narration propels a claustrophobic stand-alone thriller.

also wonderful in this is Edna May Oliver as the irascible Aunt Betsey Trotwood whose heart softens considerably towards David. I wish she and Fields could have had more scenes together but her telling off of the dreadful Murdstones is a master class in polite disdain.

so much of this (kind of) film has been copied and satirized it's hard to remember that when it came out it was defining a new genre of film and a new kind of antihero. Robinson fairly explodes off the screen w/his drive and intensity. He created in the American moviegoer's mind what a criminal /2

the alternate movie post for LITTLE CAESAR, focusing on Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Glenda Farrell, with Fairbanks embracing Farrell, who appears to be pleading with him, and he holds a revolver behind her back. No Edward G Robinson in the poster, but when you have Fairbanks you show off that face.

having a #GangsterFilmFest starting w/1931's iconic LITTLE CAESAR. This film along w/SCARFACE & THE PUBLIC ENEMY established so many of the tropes and archetypes of gangster films. Edward G Robinson is fantastic as an ambitious thug who's best friends w/a moral minded Douglas Fairbanks Jr /1

the original film poster for 1931's LITTLE CAESAR, showing Edward G Robinson in a blue fedora aiming a revolver, and to his left Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Glenda Farrell in a romantic embrace. The movie's title is beneath them in large red letters; below that are the actor's names in thin black ink

a lot of newspaper book coverage has been cut so delighted to see Rome (GA) News-Tribune having summer book reviews:

book review from Rome, GA News-Tribune by Tom Mayer

January and July (Blackstone) by Jeff Abbott

One discredited intelligence officer and a neophyte bodyguard arrive in the same Texas river town for very different reasons, only to find their investigations converging. The answers they seek are tied to a man surrounded by secrets and to a conspiracy that reaches far beyond the quiet community, Before long, murder and betrayal turn every new discovery into another life-or-death gamble. Fans of tightly paced thrillers with espionage, mystery, and plenty of twists will feel right at home.
