Listening to the 1968 BBC radio Hobbit and it’s refreshing to hear the dwarves being presented exactly the way the book in isolation does: not stout warriors, but a bunch of bourgeois, middle aged men who are so in over their heads that adding Bilbo increases their competence by an order of magitude

And I prefer media other than streaming because streaming can be cut off arbitrarily at any second.

I should note that I am not a collector of physical media for its own sake: i do not give a crap about owning the rare copy of the first edition with the typo on the back cover. I am interested solely in the music/movie/etc.

Important to note here that, despite my hypothetical-license "transfer" thing above, in fact sellers of used media do not really have any particular rights over them other than ownership.

True: physical-media prices can be outrageous. I kinda see your point, then.

in what sense? Not sure what you're getting at (not disagreeing but I just don't know what you mean yet!)

I mean, it's very much "here's this cool thing" "here's a movie I saw" "here's a game I played" "I am a rapist" "here's a book I wrote" "here's a song I like"...

As for physical music: well, the idea is that the copy you get in a used record store (say) was legitimately acquired by someone, who relinquished their rights by selling it...which rights you obtain by paying for it.

Jeff Norman @jeff2ffs.bsky.social · 14h
I'm going to argue that no one should be *selling* copies of digital music to which they don't own rights. Distributing for free, sure.

That is, financial damages, or reputational harm. The latter would cover, say, the situation where someone releases a song for free...and someone else takes the exact recording and releases it as if it's their own. Since the original was free, there's no economic damage...but there is harm.

Jeff Norman @jeff2ffs.bsky.social · 14h
Was that his intention? I don't know...but this notion that someone can just apologize for rape is deeply problematic. They need to *do* something to make people's lives better. No, that will not "make up for" what they did...but at least it might come closer to balancing the cost of their actions.

The other thing is his "apology" on Bluesky is just another post, buried amongst all his other posts (which continued as if nothing happened). If not for the attention paid to it by others, that apology would be buried.

Also: use-it-or-lose-it: anyone making a song available for free that's been out-of-print forever should not be penalized *except* by its being removed *if* there are actual, imminent release plans by rightsholders whose profits the song's presence would reduce. And no additional penalty.

In general: I would like to see all copyright "infringements" require proof of harm/damages: no harm or damage, no infringement.

I mean, the assumption that someone does NOT know what they're posting? A benefit of the doubt given no one else on the planet. Baseline: people are responsible for what goes out under their name. Esp. when they're the damned president.

A general problem is people who think that values which might be positive in ONE field should automatically transfer to governance, philosophy, and other fields. Which they do not, largely because human beings are not processor chips, carburetors, or cheeseburgers.

1808, most Black Americans could trace their lineage in the US back further in time than most "white" Americans could (if the information were available)...so babble about "heritage Americans" ought to include Blacks before it does whites. If it actually mattered. Which it should not.

The edits here are intrusive, but...even without them, whatever the hell it is she's trying to say sounds completely incoherent. I also, honestly, do not see the value of "Britishness" in the first place. I mean, "English," "Irish," etc., are relatively coherent categories, and as identities

I like how he's claimed 50,000 people were at the Dayton rally...when the facility holds only 5,000. I mean, the U of Dayton arena holds 13,500 or so. The fact that he's booking a place that seats only 5,000 is its own story.

This article provides clear illustrations (and charts) on the reasons most of us find things so much less affordable than in the past. It's got little to do with inflation per se.

Jeff Norman @jeff2ffs.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Most people think of "the economy" like the weather: things happen, for complicated reasons, and there's just no real understanding it. Wrong. The affordability crisis is a direct result of intentional decisions to depress wages, fight unions, and transfer wealth to the already-wealthy.

W/Meta, it's so hard to tell whether it's intentional malice or the fact that they completely rely upon their bots and as a matter of seeming policy never have actual humans review anything. And definitely: NEVER allow any customer to actually speak with a Meta representative.

Even in his younger, rather twee-pretentious days, Peter Gabriel sometimes hit the mark in his lyrics. The would-be rebel leader in the song says these words...and it's amazing how often actual leaders are comfortable saying words just like them:

Also shocking that it's shocking, in that how likely that any American business would care for its employees to this extent?

I've heard three tracks...and they're pretty good. The last few I've heard (don't know if they're the band's last three) seemed a bit listless, and McCulloch's vocals seemed less distinctive and rather enervated.

And their prevalence licenses acceptance. It's the dark side of the positive effect we see where, say, trans empowerment gives more people courage to emerge from the closet. Visibility creates consent and acceptance. In this case, unfortunately.

Thing is, network effects ARE real. There may not have been, say, more inherently idiotic people then...but they weren't able to influence people to adapt their views...esp. if they happen, now, to be charismatic or produce quality TikTok etc.

Other nations manage to provide access to quality education (and to trade/tech schools - which despite your comment tend to be much cheaper: I know, I work at one) for free or at low cost. Other nations aren't plagued by as many billionaires or our grotesque inequality.

Perhaps we're coming at this from different angles. Because compelling lower-income people to receive less-prestigious and valuable degrees reinforces inequality...and to me, the whole point is to work to diminish it and mitigate its effects.
