Make Colonization Great Again
The painting "American Progress" by John Gast, 1872, altered with Mark Carney's face on the head of a "beautiful and charming female ... floating westward through the air, bearing on her forehead the "Star of Empire" . . . In her right hand she carries a book ... the emblem of education and ... national enlightenment, while with the left hand she unfolds and stretches the slender wires of the telegraph, that are to flash intelligence throughout the land."

hey what's that image at :53 seconds - Conservative policy vs Grit policy eh, hey where did the liberal party come from I wonder?
Old advertisement seemingly from the conservative party of canada that has a man asking "fellow workingmen, which do you prefer?" He's holding two placards, one called "conservative policy" that sounds good, another called "grit policy" that sounds bad.

Ok back to Ontario, whatever, just fucking leave it alone alright
1784 "Map of the United States of North America". Very detailed and authentic looking, looks sort of close to today's maps and includes the boundaries of the newly created USA

Jeff Doctor @jeff.doctor · 28/08/2026
"Catarakui" works too. Just make up your damn mind you colonial scum
1755 map of the eastern half of North America. It is very detailed with countless names of places and details about them. Includes coloured boundaries of colonial claims to territory
1112
Jeff Doctor @jeff.doctor · 28/08/2026
Fine, lake Ontario it is, can we just leave it like this? I'm getting tired
1718 map of most of what is now the USA, and the southwestern part of Ontario which is called "parie du Canada ou Nouvelle France". Lac Ontario is listen along with many other lakes, rivers, and mountains across the continent but they aren't very accurately shaped or scaled.

Jeff Doctor @jeff.doctor · 28/08/2026
No not Frontignac! Also, wtf is going on with those beavers? Industrious lil fellas
1715 map of the East Coast of North America. Lake Ontario is called "Frontignac Lake", and there is a rediculous depiction of many beavers gathering wood in work teams and building a dam by timber in their arms and also hauling round disks with their tails.

or "Cadarachqui" Lake, that works too, let's do that

or not? Cadragqua lake sounds rad as hell
1700 map of Haudenosaunee homelands in what is now called upstate New York. Lake Ontario is called "CADRAGQUA LAKE"

Jeff Doctor @jeff.doctor · 28/08/2026
No? Ok fine, Lac Ontario it is, fuck it.
1678 map, mostly of modern day Quebec, includes "Lac Ontario" and many drawings of animals, names of French land holdings, and also Haudenosanee villages around Lake Ontario

Jeff Doctor @jeff.doctor · 28/08/2026
oooooo "Lake of Irocoisiensis or Irocoisen", now we're talkin', let's change them back to that plz
1676 map of New England and New York. The Great lakes look unrecognizable and out of scale along with everything else not on the eastern seaboard
2171
Jeff Doctor @jeff.doctor · 28/08/2026
No? How's "Lac Frontenac"? That's kinda catchy, I like it
1675 map of the Great Lakes Region. The Lakes looks a little more accurate than other maps at the time, but Lake Ontario is called "Lac Frontenac".
1140
Jeff Doctor @jeff.doctor · 28/08/2026
oh shit there's more lakes, and they are all really big. we need new names now, hows "Ontario" or "Lac de St. Louys"? The latter one sounds great, I bet it'll stick
1656 French map of the Eastern Part of Canada. Some of its looks more like modern maps, but the placement of SW Ontario is out of scale and and the map looks stranger and emptier the further west it goes
2140
Jeff Doctor @jeff.doctor · 28/08/2026
yep, that's a big lake. we should just call it that, big ass lake
1639 Dutch map of part of the east coast of North America, includes Lake ontario called "Grand Lac"

oh hey they "found" Lake Ontario: "grand lac contenant 300. heux de long". @mapquest.com we should just use the original colonial name if we're gonna change it again

theres gotta be some big ol lakes here on this parte incognita

On this 1550 German map the title translates to "cartography is my passion" (I think)
1550 German map of North and South America. They look like misshapen blobs, and include words such as "Canibali" in what is now called Brazil with what appears to be body parts in a bush of some kind

For example, one of the first "maps" of "Canada" 1546 - the "Dauphin Map of the world" My favorite part is the Indigenous people wearing nothing but literal animal pelts, worshiping some dude in a big chair. The animals also look hilarious

"We all know that our country could be so much more than it is. We have the land, the talent, the know-how, and the energy to be the most abundant nation on earth. And our people have a spirit that could take them anywhere they wanted to go." - — Build Canada Team that doesn't sound familiar at all
"Train tracks slice across a flat, grassy landscape with log cabins to our left and a river and mountains to our right in this horizontal lithograph. The scene is printed with vivid colors and is packed with tiny details. A train engine puffing black smoke pulls five cars from the bottom right corner away into the distance, angling to our left before disappearing on the horizon, which comes about three quarters of the way up the composition. Writing across the tops of the first three cars reads, “Through line New York San Francisco” in all caps. The open windows on the fourth car are crowded with riders. Tucked into the lower left corner, eleven log-built structures are mostly clustered closely together. Children play and run around the open door of the building closest to us, which is labeled “Public School.” Other people in long skirts or suits, some in hats, stand waving near the tracks. Four men in long-sleeved shirts or jackets and long pants, all with hats, chop down trees or hold shovels in a wooded area in the lower left corner. Four wagons, three of them covered and drawn by ox, move away from the town. All of the people in the town and on the train appear to have pale, peachy skin. The black smoke pouring from the train engine turns to slate gray where it blankets the ground to our right. Two people with brown skin, long black hair, feathered headdresses, and yellow and red clothing sit on horseback and are nearly swallowed by the smoke. A glassy, blue river winds into the distance to our left. One person is in a canoe on the river, which is lined by pines and other trees. White clouds kick up against the snowy mountain peaks that span the right half of the horizon against an otherwise bright blue sky. The margin around the scene is foxed, speckled brown against the white paper. Printed below the image, in all caps, the title reads, Across the Continent. “Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way” https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.66574.html
