As a Bath person my heart was in my mouth for a moment! Great news. Such a wonderful bookshop.

Struck by this detail in the Guardian's obituary of Jeffrey Archer. Can't imagine that even a best-selling first time writer would earn enough to recover from bankruptcy in 2026.
Screenshot of a paragraph the Guardian's Jeffrey Archier obituary: 'His [Archer's] first novel was a direct effort to regain financial control – a move that paid off, and Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less was adapted for radio, and later, for TV. By the mid-1980s Archer had written several successful novels as well as short stories, plays and children’s books.'

Speaking on behalf of my 8 year old daughter: Andy and the Band. I don't know what happened in the episode because she refuses to talk about it, but she couldn't sleep by herself for a week and even now, a month later, she still sleeps with the light on.

Honestly, I think Protein is the one. Right size, right name, right manufacturer. You're a gem, thank you.

Was about to say I'm too far from London for that (or whatever the UK equivalent of Guitar Center is—can't overstate how out of touch I am!), but I thought I better check first and I've discovered www.elevatorsound.com which is just down the road. Gonna have a happy Saturday afternoon there soon.

Ha, I absolutely love how quickly you’ve escalated here! I guess realistically it would be small form factor analogue or digital. Utilitarian rather than esoteric, but I like a synth with an oddball reputation (Korg Mono/Poly and Waldorf Microwave XTK are the exes I miss the most)

Del Boy had an ‘executive mobile phone’ in a 1989 episode of Only Fools and Horses so maybe ‘mobile’ was a common term even then? When I was at primary school (mid-80s) they were still car phones. onlyfoolsandhorses.fandom.com/wiki/Little_...

I've been trying to tidy my garden (it suffered during some building work) but I keep finding michaelmas daisies in all the wrong places and I can't bring myself to pull them up.

I'm not doing this challenge, but I am doing some refocusing after a very unproductive writing year so far. A lot less structured than #100DaysOfWriting, but so far so good. Definitely cheering you along from the sidelines though!

I was in the Oldfield Park Bookshop waiting for a train last week, and the bookseller was talking so enthusiastically to a customer about a book she'd just bought that I bought a copy too.

Isn't it! And such a lovely colour. We've been redecorating and the common thread in each room is pink (even if only a little bit) so this will be absolutely perfect. I've already picked a home for it, on the shelves I haven't made yet

I'm so sad to hear that. My daughter loves it, especially Osiris and his cheerful little wave as he heads to the underworld leaving Isis with the baby. (I don't think any panel in any comic has ever amused her as much as that one.)

Between 15:30 and 17:30 it’s tea. 17:30 to 18:00, and the meal you’re eating is supper. Anytime after 18:00, it’s dinner (or the ‘evening meal’ if you’re fancy).

StoryGraph might be the closest. It has social things but you can ignore them and just keep a log of the books you own/have read. (The barcode scanner is nice.)

Why not both? Enjoy the ongoing process of Farage becoming repellent and polarising, while indulging our idle fantasies of Binface winning and proving to be a diligent and respected local MP, and (eventually) a solid junior minister in a coalition government

A multigenerational epic starring Stanley Tucci as Phillip Larkin, Larry David as his father, and Tom Holland and Zendaya as his children. Every decision they make is worse than the last one, with repercussions that echo through the generations. Final scene: a grandchild, and some ominous music.
