Fluorescence Friday time! Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) organoids. Red are neurons, blue is nuclei (DAPI) and green is a TF that is associated with neuronal death and definitely should not be expressed being expressed in a subset of FTD neurons.

Yesterday we unblinded ourselves to the first hit in our cortical organoid FTD/ALS screen. It is.. a shocker. Stunner. Replicates too. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, couldn’t put it down. But this morning it’s my oldest’s birthday and I woke up and.. I forgot about it.

Just submitted a Parkinson’s Disease LOI looking at the intersection of TDP-43 pathology and synuclein/GBA1 using our new inducible models of TDP-43 Neurodegeneration! I have never worked with PD, but I have close family history with the disease, and am very excited!

Language-folks please chime in: I am flabbergasted. 9yo wrote a poetry book. Slice-of-life stuff on how she loves lemons, and the cold, and the rain. They are witty, deep and funny. And they are in an almost perfect, 4th grade level Portuguese. Of which she has never had a class in her life.

A couple of years ago I left industry for academia. It was a privilege: industry pay is so much higher. But I had things I wanted to do: an organoid atlas, drug screens in organoids, help patients. Usually I think it was the right choice. Today, I’m not so sure.
