Following the tragic death of drummer John Bonham, Led Zeppelin officially cancelled their 1980 North American tour on September 27, 1980. As a result, bank checks and money orders for the scheduled Richfield Coliseum concerts on October 26 and 27 were returned to ticket holders.

On September 27, 1989, the Rolling Stones’ Steel Wheels tour rolled into Cleveland Stadium with special guest Living Colour. The band had kicked off the 1989 tour on August 12 with a warm-up gig at a tiny New Haven, Connecticut, nightclub, where 700 fans paid just $3 apiece.

On September 16, 1987, Pink Floyd played the first of two sold-out shows at Cleveland Stadium on the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. It had been 10 years since the band last performed in Cleveland, also at Municipal Stadium, during Game 2 of the 1977 World Series of Rock.

On September 10, 1994, Green Day finally made their Blossom Music Center debut during the Dookie tour, after their original July date was halted due to overcrowding at the WMMS “Buzzard-Palooza” show at the Nautica Stage. All tickets for the Blossom event were a rock-bottom $5!

45 years ago today, on September 6, 1981, the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association aired on WJKW-TV Channel 8. The telethon began airing on Channel 8 in 1975. From 1969 to 1974, it aired on WKBF-TV Channel 61 before that station went dark.

On September 1, 1994, The Who’s Roger Daltrey and his orchestra performed the final concert at the Richfield Coliseum. The new Gateway Arena (Gund Arena) was about to open in downtown Cleveland, with Billy Joel scheduled as its first rock concert performer on October 17, 1994.

August 26, 1998, Pearl Jam performed at Blossom Music Center on their Yield tour. The last time Pearl Jam played Blossom was at Lollapalooza in 1992, when torrential rain turned the grounds into chaos: fans rushed the pavilion, created bonfires, and made mudslides on the lawn.

47 years ago, on August 18 and 19, 1979, the bands originally booked for Game 2 of the 1979 World Series of Rock at Cleveland Stadium instead played the Richfield Coliseum. Nighttime safety concerns forced the relocation, turning the show into a two-night event.

60 years ago, on August 14, 1966, the Beatles played at Cleveland Stadium. It’s their second Cleveland appearance, which included a 33-minute interruption as 3,000 fans crashed through a security fence and stormed the field. The band retreated backstage until order was restored.
