early design work for Brutus, Mabel & Kookoom in Mabel's Feather. Mabel went through a series of changes, but Kookoom & Brutus stayed quite similar throughout.

For both Mabel and Kookoom designs, it was important that they felt like regular Indigenous folks you might meet in your hometown (in Canada).

I looked at my family and reference images to feel out what different generations might think Kookooms look like. I decided her form/shapes were best very grounded and soft.

Designing characters for Mabel's Feather was a lot of fun! There is a lot of diversity in Indigenous folks, and it helped to start with figuring out where kookoom and mabel fell on several spectrums - especially relative ages and fashion senses.

thank you! for the show I printed them at full size and put them in secondhand frames - I cut out the faceplates and treated the surface with a mirror spray so viewers would see themselves reflected in the helmet <3
