#ISKO2026 Moulaison-Sandy suggests that human bring trustworthiness to the table. Librarians bring competence and sincerity to their work and this sets them apart from AI. Need to keep hold of trustworthiness.

David Haynes @jdavidhaynes.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
#ISKO2026 Moulaison-Sandy explores the concept of authorship in the age of AI. Library of Congress insists that an author must be a person. But AI increasingly intervenes in the writing process.

#ISKO2026 Moulaison-Sandy describes the impact that Agent AI may have on information work. Worker's core skills will change. Constraints such as space limitations on catalog cards have led to innovations such as subject headings. AI constraints will have a similar effect.

Bei Yu speaks at #ISKO2026 about a literature review on AI- supported research ideation. She considers the role of AI in research and the potentials and problems of using AI. Suggests that AI is more useful in the early stages. Ideation is still a human focused activity.

#ISKO2026 Significant differences between Web of Science and SCOPUS in the allocation of keywords to retrieved articles on LGBT+ and Knowledge Organization. SCOPUS descriptions considered more relevant to the LGBT+ community.
010
David Haynes @jdavidhaynes.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
#ISKO2026 LGBT+ terminology is not a stable set of descriptors. Identity categories have positive and negative connotation. Important for recognition and visibility, but can also fix, reduce or fragment complex social experiences.

David Haynes @jdavidhaynes.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
How do members of marginalised communities interact with systems? Use the language people want to describe themselves. Avoid uncritical application of terms. When talking about deceased people. Chain of trust: public statements by the person, correspondence, partner at time of death, etc #ISKO2026

David Haynes @jdavidhaynes.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
D Grant Campbell talks about problem of very cursory and jargon-ridden documentation in AI systems. Tendency to refer to previous versions rather than explicitly stating their approach and policy. #ISKO2026

When “Used For” Is Not Equivalent by Kempf, Hajra and Potoczki at #ISKO2026. They maintain that a different approach to traditional thesaurus relations is needed. LLMs have a role in this using a cascade ensemble evaluation to provide a confidence score to decide when human intervention is needed.

Widad El Hadi examines KO ethics through the epistemology of violence. AI-driven KOSs inherit colonial and exclusionary legacies. These biases persist in contemporary AI systems. #ISKO2026

David Haynes @jdavidhaynes.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Widad Mustafa El Hadi at #ISKO2026 focuses on the problem of bias in AI systems. Possibly the same considerations apply to human-generated KO systems. Refers to Olson's 'power to name'. Naming is never neutral, but an act of authority.
010
David Haynes @jdavidhaynes.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Widad Mustafa El Hadi at #ISKO2026 puts forward a vision of dismantling intellectual hierarchies and affirm the legitimacy of all communities as knowledge organisers. It is not sufficient to mitigate existing biases.

Maybe we cannot 'solve' the problem of different representations of communities. It is more of a process (e.g. by participatory governance). Otherwise we could be guilty of erasure of other experience. It is difficult and could be uncomfortable. Joseph Busch at the #ISKOUK 2025 Conference.

Terminology is used in specific context. Participatory governance - include the communities that are being described by those systems - to more fairly represent communities. Julaine Clunis at the #ISKOUK 2025 Conference
