The practice can be quite lucrative, too, with privateers boarding and stripping British ships of their cargo, before keeping part of it and giving the other part to the American government. The best aspect? It’s perfectly legal—in America at least.

#Sanitation and comfort are questionable in such lodging, so after a night or two, you’ll be tempted to move on. Try #renting a room from a local. But be prepared, once again, to share the quarters with the property owner and their family and a rotating cast of visitors.

Also, don’t mind the sound of #drinking and bellowing you’ll hear through the walls. It’s all part of the experience. Some of the drinkers may wander into your room at night, and wake you up in the process. Earplugs would be handy to block out the sound — but they haven’t been invented yet.

You’ll pay just a few shillings a night for a room, but don’t expect a private guest #suite. Instead, you’ll be in the company of strangers, and will likely have to share a bed with them. Among your bedmates may be the innkeeper and his or her family members. So be polite and don’t hog the blankets!

So you’ve come to #Boston in 1776 — now you have to find a place to stay. If you’re lucky you can share a room with a friendly local or an old friend, but if not, you’ll have to shack up in an inn or #tavern like Cromwell’s Head or the Sun Tavern.
