Got the eMac (running Mac OS Leopard) hooked up as a second screen for my modern Mac using remote desktop and a dummy HDMI dongle. It’s usable for writing, but scrolling and hover effects kill the FPS.

This went on for around 2 minutes. No I shan’t be learning how to make a single .zip file in the browser; this is more fun.

Some of the larger images are a whopping 600x lighter (thank you image-q and oxi-png!), so the initial load time will be dramatically reduced once everything's hooked up.

Not the prettiest, but this lil' tool takes a png, makes it 10x smaller, and keeps only 3 colours + transparency. Gonna' add compression tomorrow
A basic HTML page showing a form where you can upload an image, and that image copied below the form, with only a few colours used.

Might have to figure out how to turn my illustrations into stickers 🙈

Was not kidding about using the washi tape for everything
a colour picker dropdown menu, with washi tape attaching an input to the list to pick from.

I'm using washi tape to fix *all* of my UI design problems.
A UI design based on stationery, with pink sticky tabs showing button icons. Many pieces of washi tape are used to "secure" a UI panel to the screen.

This is the kind of tech I want to see! New and useful ways to interact with my surroundings, with a focus on the human experience, instead of a page from "1001 ways to extract rent".

The <br> tag is thus named because it places elements further away from each other, making them unable to share body heat. brrr 🥶

I think this is a good plan maybe?
⬇️ On load:
1. Get position that will be loaded into
2. Load chunk manifest (list of every chunk with stuff in it, along with what’s in each chunk)
3. Load scene and camera? (to get FoV, it might not be visible *yet*)
4. Stream in all chunks within view radius (starting with closest chunks in FoV)
5. render terrain first
    1. Render coloured geometry first
    2. Render textures
6. render entities as they load in
    1. Render a low-res version of all entities (with painting shader style applied)
    2. Render the full version of the entities once their textures load in (with transition using painting shader)

🏃‍♂️ When moving (on chunk change):
1. unload meshes for chunks outside of view radius (consider putting them in a “warm” state where the meshes still exist in memory but just aren’t in the scene)
2. load new chunks, prioritizing the ones within the FoV

👀 When looking around (during loading):
- update inFoV properties of chunks to prioritize loading closest chunks

I don't want any loading bars, so I need to dramatically shrink the assets I do load. 4-colour pngs downsized 10x are pretty smol. They don't look great, but to a GPU shader (which I know how to write now 🤓) these pngs are 🔥 FINEEEEEEE 🔥 🫦
A comparison of 2 images, a tree and a bulletin board, with image resolution reduced along with colour palette. The 4-colour, downsized images are less than 1% of the size of the full quality (compressed) ones. We go from 9KB and 211KB to 274 bytes and 1.5 KB.

Not ideal 😅 Every single image is loaded because I don't (yet) have a way of knowing whether something is going to be on screen or not. 🐌 The bigger my site becomes the slower it loads...

Jonathan Lahue @jclahoot.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Currently running into a bit of a *new pickle emoji* with the ol' website. So, before being interactive, it needs to transfer about 8MB of images (after a ton of compression). For anyone who visits the site for the first time on mobile, it looks like this:

Noodle Cat: arguably the most important piece is Musée d’Orsay’s collection.
