Great to be joined by experts from @vera.org and Prison Fellowship for a conversation on prison reform, and ways that some states are trying to make prisons less violent, more humane, and more conducive to rehabilitation. For more on their work, check out our recent report: bit.ly/4bo97UR

13 states have clean slate laws, which aim to break down barriers that people with criminal records face to participating in society. Now Maryland has a chance to join them, and more should follow. bit.ly/4s11r0Z

Criminal records can stop people from getting jobs and housing. This is not only bad for them, it can hurt the economy as well. Clean slate laws aim to fix this problem. bit.ly/4s11r0Z

Last week, the Maryland Senate passed the Clean Slate Act, a bill that would make the state’s criminal justice system fairer while streamlining government and strengthening the workforce. Here's why the bill matters and what's next. www.brennancenter.org/our-work/ana...

A win for fairness in the criminal justice system: Recent changes to federal guidelines allow sentences and post-release supervision that are more attuned to the circumstances of each case. bit.ly/4rA04aO

My colleague Ram and I wrote this analysis of the U.S. Sentencing Commission's recent amendments, which are a few bright spots in criminal justice policy. Check it out: www.brennancenter.org/our-work/res...

Taking public safety seriously means following the evidence and starting local. Read more in the @brennancenter.org analysis that inspired this video, by me and @jchendrickson.bsky.social: www.brennancenter.org/our-work/ana...

What Actually Works to Fight Crime
The administration’s plans to fight crime by dictating state bail policy or deploying the National Guard won’t build long-term safety, but there are many evidence-based ways to reduce crime.

Many crime-fighting strategies have bipartisan support among policymakers and law enforcement professionals, and they are proven to work. Sending National Guard troops into American cities isn't one of them.

Today the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing titled “Blue City Chaos and Tragedy: How the Trump Administration is Addressing the Human Cost of Soft On Crime Policies.” This is a false premise, and the hearing included discussion of several bad ideas that won’t make Americans safer 1/5

If the Admin is serious about crime prevention & helping cities with crime rates, the work starts with listening to local leaders, following the evidence, & providing support, not with deploying the Guard. @amescg.bsky.social and I walk through the evidence in a new @brennancenter.org analysis:

The Administration's plans to fight crime using the National Guard are not the way to build real, lasting safety. Here's what the evidence shows can work, even as we continue to see national declines in crime. New from the @brennancenter.org: www.brennancenter.org/our-work/ana...

While the Federal Prison Oversight Act promises to bring much-needed accountability to U.S. prisons, it can only reach its full potential if Congress funds it and the Justice Department faithfully implements it. bit.ly/3V8SO6J
