We're not even talking about this any more! Antarctica too is experiencing record low sea ice extents during winter but we're being distracted by the more immediate threat of the US going rogue.

As a NZer running my own business and not aligned to the Trade Union movement, I absolutely concur with this article. Everything has gotten way worse with this new govt which is why so many are relocating to Australia.

Engineering ain't going to cut it. Our construction and materials are designed for the old climate and cannot simply be modified to enable them to cope.

Adaptation is easy to say but when you ask for the details, then it gets very messy, especially the part about moving away from affected areas to places that aren't. Immigration is about as popular as 💩 but mobility is going to be really important to ensure climate justice.

All these positive feedbacks - loss of clouds, loss of albedo from less sea ice, wildfires, ecosystems becoming net GHG emitters etc. seem to be kicking in at about the same time, which is now. And the worse it gets, the less people seem to want to do something to stop it.

Given the enormous number of opportunities we are gifting the virus and the fact that it is well able to jump species already, it will be a miracle if it doesn't.

We've been aware of this for decades. I personally was aware of it 40 years ago. As with anything relating to the fossil fuel industry, getting that message out there seems virtually impossible. People just don't want to know until it affects them directly.

Unfortunately not a rogue minister but rather representative of a govt that doesn't value anything that can't instantly be monetized. Our resources and fisheries minister openly loathes our unique dolphins, kiwi, skinks and frogs.

Recently, a very effective vaccine was developed that has started to be rolled out. Chlamydia shortens a koalas lifespan and reduces their fertility so hopefully koala populations will start to rebound as the vaccination program takes effect.

J Cooper 🌏🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🧶🚲🐠🏄 @jccooper.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
At that time we were just learning about the Chlamydia that ravages koala populations in Australia, so it was mainly about taking samples to determine how widespread the infection is, so insensitive but also justified intervention

Back then, someone climbed the tree, roped it up and chased or shook it down. Sounds worse than it was as they mostly just backed down and we're gently grabbed. Some went too high and fell but there were no actual injuries. Hope they have refined the technique since then tho.

I'm not a koala expert at all - this was an undergrad study - but they usually move trees at least and sometimes they move a km or more. These guys didn't even browse much which made for a very boring night of observation - obviously very stressed out as catching a koala is quite a mission.

Seems like the tagging didn't negatively affect its hunting abilities then. Good to know. Tagged some koalas once and they didn't move for at least a day afterwards.

I know it's an unpopular opinion but, when you've tried something for such a long time and it doesn't work, perhaps it wasn't the right strategy after all.

The argument is not about climate denial, it's about whether keeping the hope alive that we can still avoid catastrophic climate impacts will promote climate action. 20 years of claiming that "there is still a small window of opportunity" suggests not.

I don't buy the trope that pessimism leads to no action. Those people weren't going to act anyway and use pessimism as an excuse. All the genuine doomers I know are the most active environmentalists who live their values.

Believe me, I studied Transition Engineering where we actually design societies which function on far lower energy consumption. The moment you try to implement any of that, the pushback is crazy. Take 15 minute towns, so rational, yet people lose their marbles over it.

The science says that we are on track for 3C of warming by 2100 unless we change our trajectory. We have done nothing to change our trajectory and have not met any of our pledges despite 30 years since Rio. Not baseless - it's extrapolation of our current emissions profile and ff extraction plans.

J Cooper 🌏🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🧶🚲🐠🏄 @jccooper.bsky.social · 28/11/2024
The only way we're going to cut consumption is by blowing past 3C of warming such that the transport infrastructure becomes unusable and we'll be forced into it. I wish it were otherwise but I see no other possibility. Even people who understand the consequences perfectly well still fly everywhere

There are various ways of removing nitrogen from steel, such as vacuum degassing and foaming slag in EAFs. And charcoal is used widely in blast furnaces in Brazil - not that I think that's a great solution. I don't know whether degassing is used in silicon metal production - surprised if it wasn't.

We can use biocarbon instead of coal so that the carbon used is already part of the active carbon cycle from sources that would otherwise release CO2 when they rot. There's no requirement for the mechanical properties of coke, which opens up a lot of other possibilities.
010
J Cooper 🌏🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🧶🚲🐠🏄 @jccooper.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
Carbon is still going to be required for many metallurgical applications, probably as long as we are still refining metals from ores. For example, whilst we can replace much of the carbon reductants required for ironmaking, we'll still need carbon for steelmaking.

That's why I ultimately decided not to work in Zoology and went back to university to study Materials Engineering. I knew my heart couldn't take bearing witness. Now I work on techno solutions that I know can't work unless we combine them with a deep respect and love for nature.

www.1news.co.nz/2024/11/22/w... The steel industry is planning to decarbonize making coking coal mostly redundant. Miners should take this into account when planning ahead but it seems they are not.

Starting with social science, because "woke" - a word they can't even define. Have they banned the teaching of evolution, plate tectonics, paleontology, astronomy and any other science that indicates that the earth is older than 7000 years yet?

Indigenous burning practices involved leaving a patchwork of unburnt areas. We need to apply the practices that aboriginal people spent thousands of years perfecting.
