This is extraordinarily concerning even with this administration. The American people deserve to know what is going on here.

Texas voters care very much about social media battles and culture war issues that are covered in mainstream media, where they get most of their information.

I understand the impulse here, but while the actual election is in Texas, the race is a national one. All Senate races are, because they will be endlessly debated and publicized in the national press.

Mexico isn't replacing US corn or banning glyphosate, that's just wrong. A 2024 USMCA panel already ruled against those restrictions. What actually passed is a constitutional ban on growing GM corn domestically. Imports and glyphosate use continue.

If you took an American from the 1970s and put them in a modern grocery store they'd probably cry.

And more plentiful and less seasonal. I'm only 39 but people in their 20s look at me like I am nuts when I tell them you couldn't get strawberries in the winter time in the early to mid 90s.

Just to be clear: We cannot militarily defeat Iran right now. Our efforts in the Strait and broadly against Iran have been laughably ineffective. And we're going to invade Canada?

Same realignment happened across Western democracies in the 60s-90s, tracking secularization and women entering the workforce. There's a fasinating history studying the shift, and even women's huge involvement in Fascist movements throughout the 20th century.

The US "gender gap" is dated precisely: it starts in 1980. Before Reagan, there wasn't one. The parties were closer on gender issues (the 1976 GOP platform even backed the ERA). Women voted Carter +8 over men that year, and the pattern held ever since.

What's funny is that this wasn't always the case. Women weren't the far right's opposition, they were often its base. Across the West, women were the more conservative, more religious voting bloc well into the 20th century. Today's alignment is maybe 45 years old, not eternal.

He also argued for relief for the poor through progressive taxation. Maybe I am just a curmudgeon but something that saddens me about the American academy and political left today is the obsession with Marx when the DNA for a just society is already in American foundational literature.

I don't think Americans are wicked. I think too many of us have stopped believing virtue is our own job. Structure matters, but a nation doesn't fall because its laws are imperfect. It falls when the character that animated those laws quietly leaves the room.

Institutions shape people, but they don't manufacture them. The same country produces both the demagogue's crowd and the person who won't join it. Resentment is a moral choice before it's a sociological pattern. Explaining a vice's ancestry doesn't make it a virtue.

Justin Cochran @jccochran.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
"Not malice, just structural stress" is a comforting way to avoid asking why so many chose resentment when other choices were sitting right there. Systems bend the road. They don't remove the driver's hands from the wheel.

Regardless of one's political leanings, we should open ourselves to the truth at all times, and accept that the truth could damage our beliefs. Because more often than not, it will. It should.

The funniest thing about this is he must believe that the natural result of being deemed a Nazi is to be killed, which is not the case except for a brief period in history. And at no point would any thinking person deem what happened to THOSE nazis to be "murder."

Add to that: empower our adversaries, bankroll their autocracies, and demonstrate to our allies that we are unwilling or unable to secure our mutual interests. This is sphere of influence international politics. It can only get worse.

I'm old enough to remember when we thought we'd basically be getting the JCPOA with a different name. Absolutely stunning humiliation for the US.

Something I struggle with is trying to imagine how history will describe not only the events of the early 21st century, but if it will or is even capable of describing the profound stupidity of our cultural and political moment.

Tons of downstate Illinois counties have tried multiple times through ballot measures to secede from the entire state because they hate Chicago so much. Nevermind that it would be economically suicidal.

To most people this might sound like it isn't a huge deal. To people with any expertise in international comparative politics or international law it is the single biggest blinking red light in international political economy now or at any time in this century so far.

Couldn't care less either about his interviews with tech people. But his series of lectures and interviews with Sarah Paine from the US Naval War College is one of the greatest series I've heard in years on geopolitical history and international relations. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

We all should be humorless assholes about things that are not true. It is the only way in which people can be made uncomfortable by the truth, which is the most effective form it can take.

Christianity is also incompatible with the political idealism that nationalism relies on. It teaches us that humans are neither wholly good nor wholly evil. As such, any political system that relies only on our virtue will fail. But one that relies on our lack of virtue will become intolerable.

Research is about uncovering the truth. Writing is about communicating the research in a way that shows you can explain it. Anyone can use AI to write papers. Not everyone can write good papers.

For freedom we are apparently always supposed to sacrifices for the enrichment of the gas companies, insurance companies, and weapons manufacturers. You never hear them tell us that freedom means sacrificing for the immigrant, the person without healthcare, or the parent who can't afford daycare.
