I genuinely do not want Marsha Blackburn to be the next governor of Tennessee. What's the maximum I can give to a candidate?

If you send me an email, and the first word of the first sentence is "It," I reserve the right to think mean, nasty things about you.

Took a break from Blue Sky. I need to come back. I saw this and thought, "Only in America."

I have a lot of types of least favorite emails, but "it won't let me emails" rank near the top. What is the "it" in your email? What is the action that "it" is preventing you from doing? So much of our email communication would improve if we could eliminate "it" from our writing.

I want to introduce people to the concept of active verbs. Active verbs create sentences that are not passive. My brain takes your passive-voice sentences and immediately forgets them. Do you want me to ignore you? Speak in passive voice. Do you want me to react? Use the active voice.

Today I learned that this command: chmod 007 filename ... will set a file so that only users who aren't the owner or aren't in the group can edit it. It also makes the file feel like a British secret agent.

Any date written in ISO 8601 format is valid! Also, I'm only supposed to use two digits for the year? *eye twitch*
I've written the date "2026-04-10," which is a valid ISO 8601 format. The error says, "Please enter a valid date using the format of month, day, and two-digit year.

A student showed me a website for an AI service. It was pretty obvious that all the pages advertising the service were written by AI, including paragraphs that criticized the product, using real Reddit comments.
Image was taken from the company website that read, "Be aware that Kali GPT is not an official tool developed by Offensive Security. It is more of a GPT-based interface with added Kali-related knowledge. Some users have described it as just a GPT-4 chatbot built by a marketing team."

I got a doctor's checkup after years of not stepping inside a doctor's office and months of my wife telling me to get a checkup. I got my results back: they're perfectly normal. Whew.

I've been reading about Swatch Beat Time, a time representation system developed by the Swatch corporation in the late 1990s. I want to bring it back. I also want it added to the ISO 8601 standard. I propose these examples for the standard. 2026-03-26@722 2026-03-26@722.7 2026-03-26@722.79

One of my research students came by my office. I was running some Python code directly in the Linux terminal related to his research. He looked at my screen funny. "This isn't PyCharm or Google Colab. How are you doing this?" He didn't realize that Python predates all Python IDEs.

A free-to-play PVP shooter, Highguard had a strong launch--around 100,000 people were playing on Steam on its first day--but couldn't sustain those numbers, in ways that...look, you know what, why am I even talking about those figures, writers always do that when talking about layoffs like this, is there even much point trying to dissect the numbers of a game that took years to make, but where ‘most’ of the team gets laid off just two weeks after it came out? Loads of people are now reportedly out of a job, and whatever reasons people can offer or accept for it, none of it seems sane or sustainable.

Ten years ago, I wrote a book. Today, a student walked into my office, showed me a copy of my book, and asked me to sign it. It's the first time anyone has asked me for my autograph.

NEW: Hours before it was set to air an episode about migrants shipped to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison, “60 Minutes” pulled the episode, preemptively caving to Trump. Just like that, the beloved show we have known is dead, Marc Elias writes.

I asked Google Gemini to generate a photo-realistic image of a baseball game. Perfect. No notes.
My prompt was "Generate a photo of a baseball game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the LA Dodgers. Make this image be as photo realistic as possible." The image generated depicts two baseball mounds (each with its own pitcher), with the batter standing in the infield (not at home plate), and eight additional fielders.
