The court allowed Betty to leave the indenture in 1682, moving to a new home in Ipswich, and he stopped appearing in Essex court records. When and how did Betty end up in Rhode Island? Why did he return to Ipswich? What happened at his Rhode Island trial?

A former indentured servant testified that he saw Simmons "beat Bettys so that he fainted...and whipped him with three cords tied to a stick so that he brought blood, while he asked the boy if he loved him. The boy said yes and he beat him again."

In September 1692, Lt. Gov. William Stoughton ordered the return of Thomas Betty, then jailed in Ipswich, Massachusetts, to Rhode Island to stand trial for "taking and carrying away" goods and from Rowland Robbinson.
