It's a very apt comparison, wish I'd thought of it when I was praising The Power Fantasy. As a big fan of Rising Stars it's an incredible compliment (and an excuse to talk about Rising Stars, hence the summoning).

The countdown begins. The Bizarre Bazaar: Mirror Town hits shelves 7/8! ✨ Thank you to Little, Brown Ink and author Daniel Nayeri for trusting me to capture the first weird and wonderful tale in the series. This project is made possible by a magnificent team of magic makers. I hope you all enjoy!

Project Justice was my white whale for years - wasn't able to get it when I was a kid so had to circle back round as an adult and was 1000% worth it. We let Project Justice down, not the other way around.

I do respect the hell out of any comic book movie whose finale doesn't revolve around a punch contest. I love a punch contest as much as the next guy but sometimes it really can and should be resolved another way

Neutral IS interesting and I do want to try that. When we're both in neutral and someone whiffs and gets counterattacked - that's fun. Back in neutral and a trap gets sprung - that's also fun. Parrying a fireball and rushing in? Yep, fun! Combos are the boring part, both to execute and experience.

Can vouch, this right here is a good book! Enjoyed the heck out of #1 so back it now to make sure this series can continue!

I have become hopelessly addicted to card games recently. One Piece, Magic, Marvel Champions, etc. Discovered #UltramanTCG in Seattle and now want nothing more than to stack cards and grunt that classic Ultraman "He-ah!" I have a problem, I admit, but I'm all the way in.

@emeraldcitycon.bsky.social was phenomenal. Thanks for having us! Hope we get to do it again and also Seattle is a VERY cool city. Next time we'll have an even wider selection of excellent books to read! Headed to SC next! #conbutnotforgotten

I might laugh but I also connect and that's the most important thing. I've failed before and I'll fail again but I hope other people at least appreciate that I tried without tearing others down in the process. "Everyone sucks at this, I can do it better" is rarely a good foundation for creativity.

I LOVE terrible movies, unironically. Watching someone attempt to make something they want to be amazing and just fail is beautiful. They put their entire heart into it and tried their best and it just doesn't work but dammit they're trying - I love it. If the effort is earnest, I'm a supporter!

Good rule for surviving the internet! Criticism is easy - the huge majority of these negative feedback machines rarely MAKE anything and when they try it is often quite bad. Creation is hard. I'd rather make (or experience) a spectacular failure of a project than cynically profit from negativity.

My brother also enjoys comics and has given some very honest reviews, which I appreciate! My wife reads them as well. Lemme make a bunch more and see how true that remains! Everyone else I'm honestly unsure but it doesn't change much for me - it's not everyone's medium and that's fine.

Also, the art is absolutely bringing the heat! I quite enjoy the touch that people before and after transformation look like the same person despite their differing appearances. It's hard to explain exactly what I mean but I bet it's even harder to do. That being pulled off here is super impressive.

To close the faves of 2024 list let's talk about Lawful from @gregpak.net and Diego Galindo. I bought this because I trust Pak and that trust was well-placed - this is an unsung hero of the year. It's nuanced and the characters are fully understandable even when they're wrong, which for me is ideal.

Next to talk about for fave of 2024 is Jorge Corona and @skottieyoung.bsky.social's Ain't No Grave. 5 issues of action-packed and character driven awesomeness. This team keeps knocking it out of the park and '24 was no exception. At this point if anyone on this team is on a book it's be a must read!

Nice House on the Sea likely needs no introduction. A direct sequel to the previous Nice House book, @jamesthefourth.bsky.social and @amartinezbueno.bsky.social continue to absolutely crush it. The intrigue is intriguing, the writing top tier, and the art is utterly fascinating. Top shelf stuff!

Last but not least on the "talked about before, remains excellent" list is Vicarious from @thatryanparrott.bsky.social and Eleonora Carlini. After only 3 issues this story has already taken us for quite a ride and I love it. In an era of decompression I appreciate the pacing of this book. No brakes!

Another book I've mentioned before, One for Sorrow from @mckelvie.bsky.social is amazing. Only 1 issue has been released as I write this and it's so good the whole series makes "fave of 2024" list. Stellar writing, amazing art, intrigue, old-timey goodness. The gif is me waiting for more (no rush!).

The last few years have been a renaissance for the X-Men and 2024 saw new fissioning of the characters across books. Among VERY strong competition my personal fave is Uncanny X-Men from @gailsimone.bsky.social and @davidmarquez.bsky.social. Rogue as the leader and some new mutant youngins? Yes plz!

I said this when I caught up with the first issue after missing it for a month or two, but @kierongillen.bsky.social and @casparw.bsky.social's The Power Fantasy is phenomenal perfect 10 comics. We're 5 in so far and I take NOTHING back about that initial reaction. This series is gonna be banger!

Next up, time to talk about Kill All Immortals from @zackkaps.bsky.social and Fico Ossio. The story of someone breaking away from the family tradition, business, and custom is itself a worthwhile read but then add in the incredible violence? Win. Conflict should matter, and this book reflects that!

Hunter's Moon is probably "best newcomer" of the last few years. Would definitely read that!
010
J Carter @jcarterwrites.bsky.social · 24/12/2024
That's just PART of the reason why it's one of my first reads on each release. This particular issue isn't the first and hopefully isn't the last issue of the series to try something unusual to tell a story and even the "standard" issues are stellar. The entire series is straightforwardly excellent.

Rogue Sun from @thatryanparrott.bsky.social (and changing artists who are all wonderful!) has been a kick ass book for a couple of years now. The issue pictured here, 19, was possibly my favorite of the year because it's a FLIPBOOK. This series isn't afraid of doing unique approaches to storytelling

Professionally, am I incredibly jealous that one man, Chip Zdarsky, can write and at like this? Yes. But I can hold onto this L to point out how good Public Domain has been. The spin-off/book-within-a-book (The Domain) is also very good work, so you can't go wrong. Get capes and japes in one series!

J Carter @jcarterwrites.bsky.social · 24/12/2024
Public Domain from is incredible. First and foremost it's a wildly entertaining book primarily about people in rooms talking which is often just hard to pull off. It's funny and heartfelt and perfectly paced. And then it's a comic ABOUT making comics and I just love that.

Next to address is the delightful Zatanna Bring Down the House series from Mariko Tamaki and @javierrodriguez.bsky.social. It's wonderfully odd and heartfelt and balanced extremely well between serious and fun. The art perfectly adapts on each page to reinforce the story being told... as if by magic

I'm probably not the first person you've seen talk about how excellent @jedmackay.bsky.social and Alessandro Cappuccio's run on the Moon Knight series have been, but heaps of praise can't hurt right? It is just excellent work and 2024 kept the same energy it has for years. Fantastic comics, period.

Saw Akogun, Brutalizer of the Gods at the shop and just had to buy it. Good decision, as @ayodelemurewa.bsky.social gave great insight into what drove the characters so we could draw our own conclusions and @dotunak.bsky.social made every blow, wound, and movement feel real and potentially deadly.

At this point I'll read anything Hickman does, he's always nailing it. And it's unfortunate @valerioschiti.bsky.social only has the 2 hands because the work speaks for itself and the world could use even more. It's not too late, choose a side! That's a reference to the series, I swear it makes sense

G.O.D.S. was something I was initially skeptical of but decided to buy the first issue and immediately congratulated myself for it. A fetch quest with a main character that has some secret masterplan? Sign me tf up! The issue highlighted here, #7, is a particular standout (in a series with several)

I'm not going to be the only person talking about how good Ultimate Spider-Man has been this year. The entire Ultimate line is crushing it, but Spider-Man is my personal standout. What a book this has been, a must read so far, so I am stupid excited to see what happens next. Start here, read it all!

Have been truly enjoying Wonder Woman by @tomking.bsky.social and @sampereart.bsky.social this year. Excellent balance between build up and pay off through tense writing and some exceptional art and the entire saga around The Sovereign has been top tier. If they keep this up 2025 is looking good!

Petrol Head was recommended to me on a whim by one of the workers at my local shop and hoo boy was she right. @robwilliams71.bsky.social knows how to make you care for robots both large and small and @pye.bsky.social's art makes the pulse race like you're in the car with Petrol Head and hang.

Was cleaning up the collection and it's the perfect time of year for a "things I really enjoyed in 2024" thread. Going to post those here! Unless otherwise noted, the exact issues shown are semi-random - I found them in the box and selected them as representatives of the entire series.

I've been rewatching Friends recently and I heard Ride wit Me by Nelly in one of the episodes and immediately aged another 15 years. I haven't been smacked in the face like that in a long time, it was painful.

Ace Combat Zero is the most underrated of the bunch in my opinion! A nearly perfect game that's the greatest distillation of everything the series offers in my mind. Also best wingman in Pixy!

It's so real. I've been explicitly trying to cultivate a positive overall vibe on my socials (even if I have always used them rarely) and it often feels like I have nothing to say because it's difficult to articulate good without just saying "I like" and ending there

I am now and will continue to be the madman shouting in the public square about this book! 12 issues and it's totally complete and is great. On the surface it's about a journey across the US to reclaim a soul but it's so much more than that. I never see anyone talk about it and that bums me out
