Apr 15th 1949 - Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest) was born. Unscrupulous professional legal guardian Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) considers her "a cherry" due to her age, wealth and apparent lack of family. 📽️📅 I Care a Lot (2021)

4 Screenshots from the movie "I Care a Lot" (2021): First, a woman in a white coat sits at a desk in a medical office, saying, "I don't even wanna say it," while another woman off-screen responds, "A cherry?" Second, two women sit across from her, one excitedly saying, "Don't tease me. Give me the details." Third, one of the women walks through an archive lined with law books, saying, "Jennifer Peterson. Born April 15th, 1949." Fourth, an older woman exits a luxury car in front of a suburban home, as the subtitle reads, "No debt, no criminal record, never been married."

Victor Perkins taught me at Warwick university. He was great. He really changed the way I approached film. Both as a viewer and a director.

Here’s the very talented Nathan Stewart-Jarrett in the Observer talking about things he likes to mark that fact that CULPRITS (my TV show he starred in) is going to be on ITVX on Dec 19… www.theguardian.com/culture/2024...

On my radar: Nathan Stewart-Jarrett’s cultural highlights

The Culprits actor on his favourite film for Christmas, the humour and rebellion in the work of artist Mike Kelley, and an inspiring book about failure

Finally finished Robert Caro’s THE POWER BROKER last night. The hype is true. It’s an amazing book. Vital reading. Had wanted to read it for years but never did. So thanks to @romanmars.bsky.social and Elliott Kalan and their breakdown show on @99pi.org for giving me the motivation to finally do it.

A well thumbed copy of Robert Caro’s book The Power Broker.

As we approach the 5th of November, just a quick seasonal reminder that GUNPOWDER (a 3 part drama I directed for the BBC & HBO about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot starring Kit Harrington, Liv Tyler and Mark Gatiss) is available to watch on Netflix UK right now. Not for the faint hearted!

A publicity photo for the TV miniseries Gunpowder showing the actor Shaun Dooley in character as Sir William Wade. He is dressed in 17th century garb, including a cloak and a hat. He is standing in a jail and is dramatically back lit.

Those last few posts were photos taken during location scouting for CULPRITS. We visited a lot of neglected, crumbling buildings before we selected the location for the “bank”. We saw a lot of very cool places.

I love this film. I was shown it at as a 1st year at Warwick University by the legendary Victor Perkins. It was projected in a small lecture room on scratched and glitchy 16mm. I’ve revisited it again and again. An amazing piece of work.

Watched Kaurismaki’s “I Hired A Contract Killer” the other day and noticed that Jean-Pierre Leaud’s character lives behind the NEXT DOOR to where Hugh Grant and Rhys Ifans’ characters live in “Notting Hill”.

Two doors. One on the left is the famous one from Notting Hill. The one on the right is where the hero of I Hired A Contract Killer lives.
